Honors College/Merit Aid?

Hey CC, I was just accepted to Carlson School of Management at U of Mn Twin Cities. I was curious as to whether the Honors acceptance and Merit Aid comes with the general admission letter or if it was a separate letter. I'm really banking on getting a bit of merit aid along with Honor admission. Also, when is the best time to apply for housing and what's the most study friendly dorm? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

saltytokyo…Congrats on your acceptance to Carlson and UMinn!! Any merit scholarship offers will come in a seperate letter from your admissions notification, and an invitation to join Honors will come seperately as well. The timing of the scholarship and Honors invite letters varies fairly widely based on the individual application (for scholarships) and which college you’re accepted to so I don’t think there’s any particular timeline you can count on with any certainty. Unfortunately, it’s just a waiting game…again.

According to UMinn’s Housing website (link below) the Housing application for 2013-2014 will be available at 9:00am on Thursday, 29 Nov. I believe they only require a $25 non-refundable housing deposit at the time you submit your app, so I’d recommend you submit the app ASAP as your housing assignment is based on the order in which apps are received. If you have a strong preference for a particular dorm or LLC it’s in your best interest to get the app in early.

In general, Middlebrook is considered to be the “most study friendly” dorm although you’ll probably be able to find quiet areas in any dorm and party areas in any dorm. The Honors LLC is located in Middlebrook, and if you’re invited to join Honors you are guaranteed housing in the Honors LLC if you wish. It’s located on the West Bank (as is Carlson) so it would also be conveniently located for many of your classes. Some students don’t like the walk across the Mississippi to the East Bank for classes, but our D1 lived in Middlebrook her freshman year and had no issues with the walk. If you’re interested in the Honors LLC you can put that as your first preference even if you haven’t heard officially from Honors yet, and in any case there’s plenty of non-Honors housing in Middlebrook as well.

Congrats again on your acceptance to the U and to Carlson. Go Gophers!!

Thank you very much for responding to my questions! That’s unfortunate that I’ll have to wait again, although my general application only took around a month to process so hopefully some notice will come soon enough.

Thanks for the heads up about housing. Do I need to actually enroll with the school before I can apply for housing? Because I am still waiting for other offers from some schools.

Also, do you know whether U of Mn gives preference to out of state students for merit scholarships?

^No, you don’t have to enroll before submitting your Housing app. Some universities do require that, but UMinn isn’t that way.

There are several merit scholarships at UMinn that are specifically for IS students, but outside of those any student who applies to the university will be considered for the rest of the university-wide scholarships. The Gold and Maroon National scholarships are specifically for OOS students, as they’re designed to offset the difference between IS and OOS tuition rates. Here’s a link to the university-wide scholarships if you haven’t seen them. Good Luck to you!!
