Hi, I'm applying to the SUNY Buffalo Honors College and Presidential Scholarship.

My Current high school UW GPA is 92.6 and my ACT is 35 Composite. I know that my GPA is just below the "cutoff" for the honors college, but will my ACT score ("minimum" for honors college is 29) get me in anyway? I have a strong upward trend and my UW sophomore and junior year GPA is about a 94.

As for the presidential scholar, I know my GPA is significantly under the average GPA, is it absolutely critical to receiving it or could my ACT score again make me a competitive applicant for that scholarship?

I’ve tried to find out info on that scholarship also since my daughter is interested and will be applying. You’ve probably seen that the avg UW GPA for the Presidential scholarship winners is 98%? I hope we can find out more. Congrats on the awesome ACT score and good luck!!!

thank you! and i think my GPA is going to kill me for the scholarship. but the honors college certainly has excellent benefits

I know a kid who got a full ride here… Have English with him. Seems like a slacker. Couldn’t have seen him having a 98% gpa in highschool. Pretty sure his SATs were very strong though. Apply anyways, what’s the worst that could happen? Goodluck

I think you will surely get an Honors College invitation, but may fall a bit short of the Presidential Scholarship. But there are other scholarships you will likely be eligible for. My D had a 96 avg and got a full-tuition scholarship, but NOT Presidential. Good luck.

Orchastra Mom, congrats on your daughter’s full-tuition scholarship! That’s excellent! If you don’t mind sharing, were her ACT scores 33+ or similar SAT for eligibility for Presidential Scholarship? Trying to figure out what cut offs they have. A 96% avg is certainly commendable. Does your D like UB?

^ my D is a senior and has been very happy with her choice of UB. If I recall correctly, at the time four years ago, the Presidential Scholarship required meeting BOTH criteria: GPA and standardized test score. My daughter scored 2170 on the SAT (did not take the ACT) and had a 96 avg GPA, but fell short. Although it doesn’t require any separate application process, the Presidential Scholarship is really very competitive. Here’s the link to more info:[UB Undergraduate Admissions: Costs, Scholarships and Aid - Scholarships - Merit Scholarships](http://admissions.buffalo.edu/costs/meritscholarships.php)

Good luck to everyone!

(I can’t believe how fast these four years have flown by, and now she’s starting it all over again – with grad school apps…)

Cortana, our family went to the UB open house yesterday. At the Honors College presentation they indicated to apply for Presidential Scholarship if you have a 95+% GPA and a 33+ ACT. That’s better than the 98% that’s on the website!

Yes it does, or at least it did two years ago. There was a separate application - had to submit a resume, sample of high school writing, and an essay.

According to a conversation my dad had with a Buffalo admissions counselor, Buffalo really looks at only the Weighted high school GPA and that I would have a good shot at the presidential scholarship, with a 96 W GPA. Think about it: how many kids, even across america, have 98, 99 GPAs while taking many AP classes like I did??

Cortana, just curious if you’ve applied to UB yet? Daughter is getting her app together and will apply within the week.

My D is a senior at UB, in the honors program doing a double major and a minor. She had a 98 GPA in high school, from a rigorous upstate NY school, with all honors and AP courses. She missed the Presidential scholarship ACT score by one point. I believe you have to hit both GPA and SAT/ACT minimums to be considered, at least you did in 2008. She did NOT get the presidential scholarship because of that one point, but was awarded a merit scholarship that covered most of her tuition at the time (tuition has gone up, scholarship stays the same). She has loved her time at UB.

I’m kind of confused because I got an email from ub telling me that I should apply, but I have a gpa of 93 at a really competitive hs in upstate ny and an act of 33. So I don’t reach the cutoff but they sent me an email…so should I even apply?

what would a 3.6 unweighted GPA and a 4.2 weighted GPA be equivalent to in this scale out of a hundred? I am also applying with a 34 on my ACTs
