My son also received the “at least” merit award which was lower than expected based on his stats, the charts provided by the school in the brochures and online. It was also lower than what other posters with lower stats posted. He was admitted to engineering & our state school (Maryland) has Engineering so no in state tuition for him at USC. His friends with lower stats but a major not offered at MD like business/risk management got in state tuition at USC. He was accepted at Maryland & their engineering program is much stronger so that is where he will be going.
We live in NoVA. Our state of residence is TX. She did end up applying OOS for UT (we had no idea) because admissions had me send in the wrong paperwork. They had me fill out papers saying we intended to become residents, not that we are currently residents. She is listed as OOS on their admissions portal. In state paperwork was much easier for A&M, but I talked to Vets Services and not admissions. We are headed to UT this week for her to see the campus (and to clear up residency). We have been there, but she hasn’t. She also needs to ask a lot of questions because Austin is 1,500 miles away. This is the decision trip. I think she will probably stick with UofSC. I’m pretty sure her program is better at UofSC and they have the college experience she wants.
The first letter after ACT scores had 2 scholarships listed (one was in state) and the admissions letter had a much lower one. We are in a ACM state and her program fits into it. I would prefer her to get in state on scholarship and not ACM. Her dad is AD USAF and we won’t be here all 4 years. I think she will be able to get in state with his GI Bill for the 4 years though. Hopefully. If not, we may be forced to head to UT.
@xytimes3
Good point. Do you think major makes a difference in the scholarship level. I didn’t see amounts on the chart, but I did see on the website (it’s still on the website). The first letter she received had the higher numbers too. Hoping it goes back up and the “at least” was to cover them. Good luck!!
My OOS daughter’s acceptance letter had an “at least” amount as well. She had a 33 on her ACT and a great GPA with a rigorous course load so I thought she’d qualify for in-state tuition and the honors college based on the information on the website. She wasn’t accepted to the honors college with the first wave and the “at least” amount is still pretty far off from instate tuition.
Anyone know when the final HC and Capstone notifications will go out? They’ve mailed in past years and mid February but I wonder if electronic notification will alter that timeline…
@kjg315 Do you have any updates on the Top Scholars, did they fill all the spaces?TIA
Last I heard was last week. Admissions said they will be sending them out in waves till mid February and she confirmed again that we will get a letter either way- whether the students were invited to top scholars or not. So at this point I am going with “No news is good news” right now!~
Spot opened up for reception, so we are in (in case anyone else was waiting).
First visit, and really hoping son likes it.
@college130 Glad you got a spot for the Honors reception! Please update later what it was like. We can’t make the admitted student weekends. During our Spring Break, we’ll go to the Monday Honors Admitted Student Tour.
My son received an email today thanking him for applying to HC and saying the review process is nearly complete and he will be notified of a final decision “soon”…
Also stated that he was not selected for Top Scholars (didn’t expect it given he was not admitted to HC in the December wave) but still being considered for other awards which will be released mid March through the portal. His acceptance letter included the at least in state tuition award.
Anyway - for HC and Capstone it would appear decisions are forthcoming.
@HesNot same email here.
My son did get into the honors college in December, unfortunately got the rejection email for top scholars today. One of his friends received the invitation for top scholars today though.
Received email yesterday , not invited To Top Scholars but guaranteed scholarship info will be sent out in March .
kjg315 Same!
Just an FYI - went to admitted students day today and HC said next notifications in “2-3 weeks” - undergraduate admissions said by the end of this week… so we’ll see who holds the reigns apparently ?
@HesNot did they say how the notifications will arrive? Portal update?
@HesNot - We visited this weekend too. Wasn’t the dean of the Honors College hysterical?
They just said electronically - didn’t specify email or portal or both
He was engaging and yes a good sense of humor!
My son and I are attending the admitted students HC reception in March. Can you give more information about what to expect? Thanks
