Honors College

How is the Honors College? They also have EXCEL...... Anyone in these programs?

The Honors college is alright. The main benefits are that you get free printing, the best dorms (if you live in Towers) and you get to register for your classes before everyone else. You do have to take Symposium during the first semester, which is a really lame class where you listen to lectures about community and have to teach at an elementary school for five weeks. At Orientation they try to tell you that honors courses are the same difficulty as regular courses, but they’re lying.

I completely disagree with penguins&otters. The benefits he/she mentioned are good such as unlimited free printing at the honors computer lab, access to the honors reading room for studying or anything, towers III apartment if u choose to live there, and earlier registration than anyone else. The honors college has been a great experience for me so far. the “lame class” is actually pretty interesting and u get to hear some pretty cool speakers. granted not all of them are fun, some are pretty boring. yes u have to volunteer at an elementary school but so wat? its community service! are you above giving back to the community?? its a really fun experience, the kids look up to you as a cool college student, you have a lesson plan made for you and you can cover or omit whatever you want. honors classes are NOT harder than regular courses. its college, every class is hard. It all just varies by professor no matter what subject or university. I personally like honors classes because they’re smaller and the people are all close to the same level.

Agree with marlins! S is a junior in the Burnett Honors college. He’s almost finished with his requirements, and he’s found his experience with Burnett to be quite good. Another thing not mentioned is the advising. The couple of times he’s had difficulty with his schedule, i.e. with the math department that became one of those circular puzzles you cannot hope to get out of even if you can find the person whose signature you need, Rex from Burnett worked his magic and “poof,” all was well again in the kingdom. He still remembers the Friday honors 3 hour open house we attended prior to enrolling at UCF. Really rainy Friday, S and I were actually the only ones to attend. We sat with Rex, two students and the director for about an hour and a half … and they very informally joined with us in a private question/answer session, helped him narrow down his focus for his major/discussed his options after undergrad/encouraged him to become involved/ as well as answered any particular question he had related to the university, etc. Truly made a positive impression as the afternoon could have been cancelled, or at the very least, we could have been very short changed.
