Sorry if this was asked already.

Does one have to be accepted to Tulane before applying to the Honors College?

I guess I should ask first, is there a separate application for the honors college?

Sorry for the ignorance. It's already mid October and deadlines are coming up!

Thanks for the help!

Hi old friend. I have actually written on this before (big surprise!), but happy to repeat it.

First a definitional difference. Tulane has an Honors Program, not an Honors College. I am not being picky, there really is a difference, and the answer to your second question is a big part of the difference. An Honors College is a truly separate school within the university, and would require a separate application. For examples, take a look at Barrett Honors College at Arizona State, Barksdale at University of Mississippi, or Schuyer at Penn State. I may have misspelled some of these, but you will find them. Tulane, being a private school with already highly selective admissions criteria, has an Honors Program within Newcomb-Tulane College that takes kids from all the schools within Newcomb-Tulane College based on performance, be it Liberal Arts, Science/Engineering. Business, etc.

They make an initial selection upon admission based on high school performance, test scores, etc. I suppose it could be appealed if they don’t offer it up front, but you can earn your way in also by obtaining a certain GPA in your freshman year (3.4 I think, but I would have to check again). I am sure all the info is on the honors site [Tulane University Honors Program / Welcome](http://honors.tulane.edu/web/)

I am impressed with the program and I believe they are dedicated to making it stronger by hiring new staff to help students win prestigious fellowships and awards, as well as to address the needs that the best and the brightest have.

Let me know if you have other questions, or write Dr. Luongo. He is the head of the program and very nice and always responds.

I believe it is the Honors program I’m looking for. Thanks for the clarification and the link. Have friends at Tulane who live in Butler because it is the honors dorm.

As it’s mid October, and deadlines are approaching, want to make sure have all the paperwork lined up.

Just submitted the application so far.

Wanted to make sure we meet any deadlines for scholarships, honors programs, residence hall signups.

Some schools require you to be admitted before you can do these things. Others allow you to apply for other things before your admission comes in, so you don’t get caught in a bottleneck.

Thanks again for your help.

Sure thing. The major deadlines for you (besides the application of course) is for the DHS, the Community Service Scholarship, and whatever deadlines are associated with the various Louuisiana-residents only scholarships, which I never looked into since they didn’t apply to us.

My D is in Butler and is liking it just fine. Her only comment (besides the A/C being too strong sometimes) is that the noise from OUTSIDE is a bit distracting. I guess the walls and windows are a bit thin. But she thinks her roommate and floormates are great and is happy enough with the room, even if it is a bit dated.
