Honors college

Getting a bit confused about the honors college. Seems there are a bunch and don’t know which son would qualify for or is in automatically.

Son is a NMSF, has a 32 ACT, will be an engineering major.

We’ve done the school application, filled out the scholarship application, and have been accepted to Bama and the College of Engineering.

Do we just apply for the regular honors college, or is it an automatic admittance, no need to apply?

He was also invited to apply for University Fellows, and I understand that is a separate admission.

Just wondering, is there a general Honors College, where you can live in the Honors dorms, and does that require a special application, with a specific deadline and teacher recommendations and essays?

Don’t want to miss out on any opportunities son has with his acceptance because we didn’t fill out the necessary paperwork.

Based on other threads, I’m assuming the computer based honors program is competitive like the university fellow. Do we have to be invited to apply for that one?

Thanks for any help!

montegut, if you go to mybama and log in, towards the bottom of screen on the left, is a link to honors college app. there are a number of them, university honors,.computer based etc. you can apply to any and all. computer based is the most competitive but no by invitation, you can apply . ONce you have applied to the honor colleges of your choice, you should then be able to log onto the fellows application and complete that. but you must do honors first and have received the invitation to apply for fellows (which he has)

Everyone who wants to be in an honors college program must do the app…even NMF.

However, for admission into UHP as NMF, it’s automatic once they receive your honors app.

I know the word “automatic” is misleading for honors and for scholarships. You stil must apply; but the award or entrance is automatic once apps are received.

It’s a super EZ app. The essay required for UHP is NOTHING…just write a simple paragraph answering the prompt - NO BIG DEAL at all. It’s just a little way for them to learn a little more about you…it’s not a “make or break” essay at all.

IHP used to require an essay, but I don’t think it does anymore…check and see. IHP doesn’t use a separate app. IHP is great for those who will major in business or who are interested in becoming fluent in another language.

Just check any or all of the boxes to the program(s) that you’re applying to.

However…the essays for CBHP and Fellows are a big deal. What you write will likely determine whether you get invited for an interview in Feb. There may also be a resume that is required. Dot your i’s and cross your t’s for CBHP and Fellows…those are highly competitive…highly. But, so worth it if you are accepted.

You must apply to UHP in order to also apply to CBHP. The same rule probably applies to fellows.

There are many perks associated with being in the Honors College programs…
Priority registration - a biggie!!!
Honors housing
honors classes are taught by the best profs
honors classes are smaller in size

I wrote more info about the various honors programs in The Honors College here… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1063376745-post4.html

To give you an example of the benefits of priority registration see below

Honors kids get to register during the first 4 time slots detailed below. Everyone else registers later. Registration is done online.

My DS1 will get to register in the first time slot. My DS2 will get to register in the 3rd time slot (he came in with 41 AP credits). The registration schedule only recognizes complete credits, not credits-in-progress. Therefore, even though DS2 is taking 17 credits this semester, those 17 are not counted yet. He only gets to count the 41 AP credits.
