How good is the Honors College? How many students do they take per year?

As a parent of 3 kids in 3 different University Honors programs, I am most impressed with UB’s program. In my opinion they demand more of an Honor’s Student with regards to academic as well as extracurricular activities. Their academic standards are quite high. Other kids are in oos Universities that tout their ability to steal kids away from Ivy’s. We are happy with Governor’s dorm, it seems to be a serious place for Honor’s students to get their work done.

Don’t know how many they take…you get invited into it either when you receive your admissions decision or shortly after. It seems that they take most people that meet the minimum requirements.

The Honors College is great. It does require more from students - there are honors requirements - but I think it’s more than worth it. Even just the fact that honors students make their schedules before anyone else (yep, freshman honors students can register for classes before non-honors seniors) makes it worth it alone. You’ll never have a class you want but can’t get.

Plus everyone in the honors college is really nice to work with, and it’s a good resource to have.

^ Thank you.
I’m already in Honors College with the Presidential Scholarship. I was wondering, how does it compare to something like, say, Colgate University, especially as I would have to pay for the latter, but Buffalo is a free ride?

just got the honors packet in the mail today

No idea how Colgate is. I got the Presidential Scholarship last year and I took it - it’s wonderful. They pay for tuition, housing, even meal plans and textbooks.

When I was applying, I overlooked UB for awhile, but after a few visits they impressed me more than any of the schools I applied to (most which ranked very high for my major). That opinion hasn’t changed since I’ve been here.

What is the average class size for the Honors College? Are there any classes only for Honors College students?

Average class sizes are hard to say…depends on the class. Freshman general classes are bigger than classes once you get into your major. Honors doesn’t really impact that.

All first-year honors students need to take an honors seminar each of their first semesters. These are generally smaller classes. In some case where it’s a seminar that also covers a gen ed (eg. World Civ) you are in a large lecture but have the professor instead of a TA for recitation. I really like how that works out.

The big advantage to honors is you get to register for classes before anyone else. Thus you’ll get whatever class you want - nothing will ever be full. So you can sign up for the classes you want at the times you want with the professors you want.

sushmita,

for this coming fall (2010); class of 2014:

UB had over 19,000 freshman applications…

They accepted 300 to the Honors College…or the top 1.5% of applicants

A little OT: My S is going to apply to the honors college - he’s a junior and just got a 32 on the ACT, will be taking the SAT on Saturday. He has a 730 on the math SAT II and will be taking the chem SAT II in June. He has an approx. 97 weighted average and will be taking more honors and AP classes his senior year (his average will go up). Can anyone chance him for the honors college and the Presidential? He’s also got lots of community service, honor society, volleyball and fencing teams, camp counselor during summers. What do you think?

I’d think he’d get in the honors college without an issue. Possibly presidential, depends on how he does in the near future I’d think. If I recall correctly, Presidential is 33 ACT or 1520 combined SAT (Reading/Math).

If he gets high enough test scores to apply, he probably has a decent chance - seems to fit the qualities of other presidential scholars that I know. The presidential scholarship does require an essay and I believe the essay plays a large part in to the decision, so writing a good essay would be important.

Was the Honors package with your big envelope acceptance, or did it come separate?

It’s separate. I got it a day later.

You are right, I got it on Friday and my Acceptence and Merit came on Thursday. I see it says 300 out of 19,000 applicants. How many of the 300 actually attend and join honors?

Just out of curiosity, is mine the only one that says 325 accepted and not just 300? lol

haha no, mine said 325 too. I was wondering about that.

Got mine, so happy. =)
