Honors Colleges

I was accepted to Penn State University Park months ago and I applied to Schreyers as well. I hear back in march, but I was wondering how Schreyers and honors colleges in general compare to other schools. I was accepted to the Honors college of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers, and the honors program at Maryland. How do these compare to Schreyers, assuming I get in? Also what is considered better when applying to medical school: graduating from an Honors Program or attending a more prestigious institution?

There are many threads out there with comparisons of various honors programs but most have PSU near the top. According to one detailed analysis, only a couple of schools were ahead of PSU in terms of admitted honors freshman SAT and award (e.g., Rhodes, Truman, etc.) winners and the two I recall were Georgia and Pitt. UMCP could not be compared because they didn’t publish their admitted SAT data but UMCP and PSU are in the same ballpark overall (I like UMCP a little better) so either would be great IMO. Don’t know much about Rutgers, sorry.

Most respondents think that med schools look at GPA and not whether or not you took honors classes. But being in an honors program has some distinct advantages: smaller class size and access to profs which can help your grades and better access to research opportunities which should make a difference to med schools. That might be enough in itself to go the honors route.
