Honors Colleges

Anyine hear know anything about honors programs at colleges? I'm just curious about these sort of programs, and wanted to know the perks of them.
In case you are trying to match me to an honors program my stats are:

3.9ish GPA
2070 SAT(1390 old format)
Awaiting scores, but will have 3 APs(bio, psych, AHistory)
Will take 2 SAT IIs at least (bio, math Ic)
hundreds of hours of volunteer work(about 400 to be exact)
Have much work experience(if that counts for anything) doing gardening, babysitting, tutoring, shadowing children with autism, you name it, I've done it!
Thanks guys!!!!

By the way, I'm totally bummed out :( USC's prerequisites for their honors program is a 2100 SAT and UCLA's is 2080(10 POINTS AWAY!!!!)

Bump Bump Bump

Have you considered simply applying to Berkeley as a regular student? I assume you are from CA...

What state do you live in? Your flagship state school probably offers an honors program, and you could probably get a merit scholarship in addition to that...

I've also heard good things in particular about UT Austin's honors programs.

You'll need to take the Math IIC subject test, not IC. UC doesn't accept Math 1C. And to be brutally honest, those "stats" won't necessarily even get you into USC or UCLA, let alone their honors programs, although they're good enough to put you in the running. Honors programs can vary a great deal from school to school, so it's hard to generalize.

I am from New York, and I've heard of the CUNY honors program, just wanna see my option. And kluge, I was simply stating what I needed to be eligible for these honors programs. Had i been 10(or 30) points jigher, I would have been eligible. I realize I'm in the 65th-75th persentile at thse schools. It's not that I want to go to school in California so much, or that I'm dying to go to these specific programs, it's just that these college websites were the easiest to navigate in terms of finding the honors programs and pre-reqs.

I'm in the OSU honor programs, which is probably similar to many other state schools’ programs. You have to keep up a higher GPA and take at least one honors class per quarter to stay affiliated, but you get priority scheduling which is pretty amazing in such a big school.

If you're attending a top-tier private I doubt being in the honors program is really a big deal.

I don't think things like volunteering hours and ECs really matter for admission into an honors program. It's probably all class rank and test scores. If you don't get in now, you can always reapply later on.

kelseyg, I looked at the OSU website, and I fon't understand the benifits of it. I'd still have a 20+k tuition to pay, which is my biggest concern. Do you enjoy the program? Do graduate schools know about this honors program? And just out of curiosity what did you scoreon your SATs(and is that above, below, or just about the requirements)? Thanks for helping me out!

She had an SAT score of 2240 and she is not attending OSU yet (class of 2011). You can see that in her stats profile.

If you are from NY, Stony Brook is another possibility. The minimum criteria for the Honors College are a combined score of 1300 on the two traditional (math & critical reading) components of the SAT, and an un-weighted high school average of 93. Your score meets the minimum requirement. The honor program is selective. About 17% of all applicants are admitted.

Stony Brook's honor college home page is http://www.sunysb.edu/uaa/honorscollege/index.shtml

Hope this will help. :)

ti388, thats some great info, thanks for the advice! Keep the posts coming please!

By the way, the Scholars for Medicine program at Stony Brook sounds awesome(automatic accpetance into Stony Brook Medical School)

The CUNY Honors College should be on your radar, I believe the median SAT is 1400 and 3.8 GPA, so you are a match. The program has some very nice perks: priority scheduling, special seminars, cross-registration with other campuses, a free laptop, free or heavily discounted admission to a bunch of places, and a $7500 stipend for scholarly endeavors.

I'm in the SUNY buffalo honors.. the main perks are definitely priority registering and just being able to feel part of a smaller group inside such a big state school

dwincho, do you honestly think I can get in there? I've heard so many stories about how difficult it is to get in there. And where did you find the median SAT/GPA? And ajr, how do you think the honors program at buffalo compares to those at Binghamton and Stony Brook? Did you get any financial help because of being in honors? And this may sound stupid but, is priority scheduling that important?

I heard Pace has a good honors program ,and you more than quialify.

"To be eligible for Honors College, first year students must have a high school average of 90 or higher, an SAT verbal score of 550 or higher, and an SAT math score of 550 or higher"

Dennis, with pre-requisites that low, how great can the program be? Im gonna check out the website now. Do you know anything else about the program? Thanks for the advice. Keep the posts coming!

Well this girl from my school’s graduating class she was number ten and opted to attend the Pace honors program. I spoke to her the other day and she says that she is very happy. The school itself, when I visited, was not right for me, so I recommend you visiting.

Check out Fordham's at Lincoln Center Honors program, seems very selective

Dennis, you are a life saver. If I need any college guidance, Im coming to you. By the way, how was Bard?
