Just wondering if anyone has been nominated for the '09 honors colloquium visit for prospective students this summer. Are you planning on going and where are you from if so?

How do you get invited? Ds has gotten so much mail inviting him to things at A&M but nothing from UT.

You get invited based on a qualifying PSAT score, but from what I understand anyone who requests entry into the honors colloquium will be accepted.

Yeah, you’ll be nominated, but if not you’ll get to self-nominate but hurry up, once you get the letter try to register because you’ll have to register for the classes you want to take and like everything else its fcfs…and the class on sexual orientation, hyenas, sheep and twins is nowhere near as interesting as it sounds…

I looked it up. Seems ds would qualify, but he has a conflict with the dates. Bummer.

not sure you’re supposed to receive info in the mail. I haven’t received anything so I don’t know if this is the case for everyone or if I wasn’t qualified.

no, i went last year I got the letter in the mail at about this time last year, if you don’t get the letter, don’t be discouraged, you can always self-nominate, or just not go…o_0

is this just an extended visit? does it help in admissions for honors programs at ut?

It’s a 3 or 4 day program for high-ability rising seniors that UT wants to target. I don’t think it helps in honors program admission other than getting people to apply who might not have otherwise.

BTW I played rugby in high school. It was a great experience.

Im going, anyone else?? :)

I went and really enjoyed it. I feel much better now about UT Austin as a safety/match. That is to say; Austin’s still not my #1 choice, but I can definitely see myself going there.

Also, Jester doesn’t smell like **** in my experience.

haha, thats what i thought until i actually started the whole college application thing…well long story short i’m going to ut starting next month lol…don’t rule it out it really has everything you could really want there’s a reason they call it the harvard of texas where i live (south texas) look for a good school for you i’m not telling u only consider UT just make sure you’re not just gonna rule it out, you never know

how far ‘south’ do you live? i live in Pharr and they don’t call it the Harvard of Texas here… haha

rice is known as harvard of the south, not UT

UT and Harvard are two complely different experiences academically that it’s difficult to compare them. Harvard does not offer the breadth of programming that UT offers. Harvard is better regarded in many disciplines, though, particularly in Liberal Arts and in Natural Sciences.

I’ve never heard Rice called “the Harvard of the South.” That would be Duke or Vanderbilt.

The statement is a fallacy in itself… UT is obviously NOT Harvard for many reasons and although there are some general similarities, there are more DIFFERENCES that make it incorrect to say that UT is the Harvard of Texas… The only feature i see both school’s competing in the sate of texas is the number of student’s that want to go to the Universities… in that aspect “UT is the Harvard of Texas”

UT was picked as one of the original Public Ivies, if that counts for any similarity.

[Public Ivy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Public Ivy - Wikipedia)

Why does it matter if UT is a Harvard-wannabe or not?

“…they call it the harvard of texas where i live (south texas) look for a good school for you i’m not telling u only consider UT just make sure you’re not just gonna rule it out, you never know.”

They said UT is the Harvard of TEXAS. Not of the south or any other area. They said Texas. Besides that, they were not trying to say that UT is in the same league as Harvard. Maybe some people think it is, and maybe some don’t (I don’t), but they weren’t trying to say either thing at all. All they were saying was how UT is a huge school in Texas just like Harvard is a huge school in the whole US. And besides THAT, it was just his opinion. Whether people think Rice is the “Harvard of Texas” or not doesn’t matter.

Silly people. Ironic, isn’t it, that as much as you put it down with only that much insight in your heads I question whether you could even get into UT.

Much less Harvard.

LOL.

“I question whether you could even get into UT.”

Someone is cranky. I am amused when people argue about such stupid things.
