Honors Course Selection

Did anyone else doing honors for fall (not Summer B) get this email? I’m doing fall, but the email specifically says at the bottom that those who are stating fall will receive this same email in late may. do you think there is a problem? if so, ill give them a call on Monday. I already registered for preview.

Dear Adam,

If you are planning to attend the University of Florida, you need to register for Preview, the mandatory 2-day orientation program for new students, as soon as possible. During Preview, you will meet with an honors advisor and register for your summer and/or fall classes. Preview dates are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. To register for Preview, visit www.dso.ufl.edu/nsp/orientation

You must complete the following prior to attending Preview:

Honors Course Registration Open through May 11 for Summer B honors students only:

You have the opportunity to reserve an honors course before you attend Preview. By participating in the early reservation system, you can secure a spot in an honors course that best suits your interests and needs. Students who do not participate in this process will have a much more limited selection of honors classes at Preview. Due to the popularity of a select number of honors courses, it will be important to choose no less than seven courses that you are interested in taking. If you do not, your likelihood of reserving a seat in any honors course is substantially reduced.

Do not worry about getting stuck with a course you don’t like; this system will not actually register you for an honors class. Honors advisors at Preview will work with you individually to make sure that all of your first-semester courses, including your honors course, will be appropriate for you based on your interests and previous experience in AP/IB and dual enrollment courses. You will be able opt out of the course that is reserved for you when you attend Preview.

The reservation system is now open and will close at midnight on Friday, May 11. The reservations will be assigned by computer lottery after the system has closed. As long as you make your seven selections by midnight on May 11, you will have exactly the same chance to get into your top choice as all other honors freshmen.

To reserve your fall honors course, familiarize yourself with our fall courses, listed at http://www.honors.ufl.edu/courses/coursesfall07.html , and make note of those that interest you. Then, log onto the course reservation system at http://www.honors.ufl.edu/webapps/coursepreferences/ using your Gatorlink ID and password. If you have any problems logging in, call 352-392-HELP for assistance. Select seven courses and rank them by order of preference. Once you click the “reserve” link next to an honors course, your selection is immediately recorded by the system. You can confirm that you have made a selection when it appears at the top of the website. Do not forget to make your selections before midnight on Friday, May 11.

Preview Prep: In Preview Prep you will enter your predicted AP/IB scores and dual enrollment credit, so your advisor can accurately place you into the proper courses for your first semester. If you plan to take calculus or chemistry at UF, you must take the Chemistry Readiness Assessment and/or Calculus Readiness Assessment placement tests available through Preview Prep. Preview Prep has a link to which majors require Chemistry and Calculus. We cannot register you for these courses without the proper placement score. You are only allowed to take each placement test once, so please take them seriously and note the courses you place into at the end. To complete Preview Prep, visit www.preview.ufl.edu/prep

Immunization Paperwork: Your immunization paperwork must be cleared through the Student Health Care Center prior to attending Preview, or you will not be able to register for classes. You can check your immunization status by completing Preview Prep.

We can’t wait to meet you at Preview! Don’t forget to reserve your honors course for next fall by May 11. If you have friends in the Honors Program who are not beginning until fall, they will receive a similar message about course reservations in late May.

Sincerely,

John Denny
Assistant Director, University Honors Program

My daughter will also be attending the Honors Program in the fall and recieved the same message yesterday. The last sentence is definitely confusing. I think the only variable here is when to register for the fall honors course. But if you register on or before May 11, you might somehow become designated as a Summer B registrant, which could be a problem. So I think it would be worth checking into a little more.

The e-mail was supposed to go to Summer B admits for Honors only, but it went to Summer B and Fall admits by accident. No big deal. If you are a fall admit, you can do the course lottery now or in a few weeks.

Any link to confirm that? I got the same e-mail and I'm a fall admit.

I deffinitely missed that last sentance! I am starting in Fall and I picked my honors courses last night. I hope it's not a problem.

this email really confused me

yeah, i think its a mistake, but im gonna call them just to be sure. meanwhile, i went ahead and picked my courses, though i dont know if thats valid. i dont see how it could be a longterm problem however. well see what they say.
