Honors Day/Accepted Students Day

Since we attended some of both Friday and Saturday I thought I'd start a new thread to get everyone's impressions. Here's how we saw it:

Honors Day Opening Remarks: this was a good session and answered some questions about the Honors Program. I mostly enjoyed the student speakers that gave their experiences at Pitt and the Honors program.

School of Pharmacy session: This was ok. A lot of the information we already knew because we already went through the application process. They talked about each year of the professional part of the program which was interesting. The big news from this session is that after four years, they will be awarding a BS in Pharmaceutical Science and then of course the PharmD at the end of six years. You don't have to take any extra classes, you just receive it and can participate in graduation etc. I think it's a great idea if for some reason you had to delay your last two years or if you decide to go on another path, you at least have your BS.

Bus tour of Pittsburg: this was great and we had a great tour guide. The view from Mt. Washington was great and we went back that night to see it from that point of view.

Honors College Opportunities Fair: We only had time for a brief walk around and picked up some information on research opportunities.

Stores: We visited the Pitt Shop on Forbes, and the other store in Peterson Events Center. The Pitt Shop has a larger selection, but you received a 20% off coupon for anything at the store at the Pete.

For Saturday we skipped the opening remarks and the three of us went to 3 different sessions--

Life at Pitt, Life after Pitt: Son attended this and enjoyed it. Said the student speakers were great.

So, What happens next: Husband attended this and it was informative as we'll be doing all the registration for housing and meal plans soon. One note-- once the student gets their Pitt email address, they start getting email send there....so they need to start checking it!

Parent and Family Resources: I attended this and it wasn't offered on Friday. It was a nice session and had great information about the Office of Parent and Family Resources, which is new in the last year. Their general message was yes, this is a big university, but we have a wealth of resources to help your student through any issues and problems they may have. Here is their website: Division of Student Affairs

Sutherland Hall: We just walked up the hill to check it out and it really is a nice area—much quieter than the towers area.

Overall it was a great couple of days and we came away with the feeling that our son has made the right choice by selecting Pitt. I might add that all of the Pitt Pathfinders were wonderful and the whole event was very organized. They had 2100 people there on Saturday and it seemed to go smoothly. As a side note-- a kid that we know from our home town is a Freshman and we joked that we might run into him, but what are the chances at a University as large as Pitt. Didn’t we run into him just before we left!

Hope this helps with anyone attending future

Excellent summary! Thanks for posting. Best of luck to anyone considering Pitt! It’s been great for my daughter.

Yes, it has been excellent for our son too! Although he is still recovering from Pitt losing last night – maybe next year :)

My son is a freshman and loving it as well. Never cared about Basketball ever - until last night. Bad loss.

Ah they lost last night? I remember the lady talking about the game during the seminar yesterday.

It was a crazy ending to the BB game: tied 70-70, Pitt fouled and Butler made the free throw. So, so sad…

Since I don’t know how to point to old thread’s I’m bumping this one. :)
