Honors Day

Is anyone else going to the honors day on march 18th? (tomorrow)

We will be there!!

I’ll be there! I’m so excited :D.

We’re going to it on April 15 so please report back!

We plan to be there - arriving very late tonight.

We will also be there - and arriving late tonight as well.

bump … today’s honor’s day participants - can you tell us what you liked, didn’t like, etc while it’s still fresh? Thanks from those of us coming in April.

I liked how there was a lower campus tour and a Pittsburgh bus tour… I didn’t like how there wasn’t an upper campus tour. I also didn’t like how they didn’t go into specifics about my major (math)

Well, you guys certainly got lucky with the weather! When I was there, four years ago, it was such a horrible March day, snowing and windy. I’m surprised my daughter even wanted to go to Pitt after that! :)

It’s been an absolutely gorgeous day here! 70 degrees and sunny! We flew in early Thursday morning and spent the entire day tooling around Oakland and Pittsburgh. The program today was excellent (especially the engineering hour and a half - excellent speakers with good information). Interesting to discover: SPACE is moving into the Forbes Honors Housing space (on Forbes Ave.) due to high demand (can house over 200 freshman engineering students there - much more than they could house on the SPACE hall of the “A” tower), while the old Forbes Freshman Honors students will be moving to Sutherland (upper campus).

I was told by UHC that there will be nearly double the freshman honors housing as compared to last year, I guess because of the move. That’s the good news.

There will be twice the honors housing but Sutherland is quite a hike. My daughter"s friend gave us a tour of upper campus and my DD may opt out of honors housing due to the location. We visited the honors department and no one was there. I was somewhat disappointed with the honors program.

Doc Stewart passed away last year. He was the founder and guiding light of the honors college. So it’s hard to say what the changes will be.

Maybe the honors staff was busy with the activities of the day. I don’t think there are more than 10-11 shown on the site. What else was disappointing about the honors program?

The main session in the morning was interesting and we enjoyed the bus tour of Pittsburgh. My son was actually kind of psyched that honors was moving up to Sutherland. Yes, it’s a hike but there are buses constantly and he loved when we got up there the grassy area behind Peterson was full of sun bathers and frisbee throwers. It was a georgeous day for sure. The dorms just seemed a bit more quiet up there at least from the lobby perspective and they have their own food court, where Forbes didn’t.
We’re going to hit some of the other sessions tomorrow at the accepted student day. They said that 2100 people had registered for it. Yikes!

I went to the honors college day today with my mom and dad. The event pretty much helped me realize that I definitely want to go to pitt!!! The lower campus walking tour was great and after seeing the towers dorm (which was actually larger than I thought it would be) and the market central area, as well as the cathedral of learning, etc. I feel that the school is a good fit for me. The honors college information session was good, and I also really liked that engineering session (dr.borovetz was great!) however there was one student in the engineering who went on about his study abroad in Brazil…and that cut off the last student who was talking about bioengineering and pre-med (what i’m planning on doing) so that was the only thing that upset me. I agree with the others that the weather was amazing! the current students were helpful, polite, and nice. I also got a $15 sweatshirt and $6 tee from that 30 year old spirt wear stand!!!

AHH IT WAS SO GREAT!

Went to the Honors Day. I flew in from Chicago Thursday with my dad, and we basically chilled out that day by checking out the area, went on a run through the area, etc. I was actually pretty pleased with the whole Sutherland honors housing move, as I prefer the scenery of Upper Campus to the lower campus. I’m a pretty mobile guy too, so neither the hills nor the distance are any hindrance to me.

As a whole, the Honors Day made me love Pitt, and thank goodness too. I’m in this weird financial limbo where my family is not wealthy enough to comfortably afford the top tier schools (if push came to shove, it could be done, but it’s not worth it) but too wealthy to receive much in the way of aid from them. Pittsburgh threw so much money at me that I was slightly skeptical. I’m 95% sure that I’m going there, barring some even more incredible offer from another school.

I really enjoyed yesterday’s Honors Day :D. I wish I had more time to check out Pittsburgh, as it seems like a cool city. We went on the lower campus walking tour and checked out the honors opportunity fair. I love the Cathedral of Learning. If I end up at Pitt (still waiting on decisions from other places), I’ll certainly spend a lot of time there! The opportunities fair was pretty interesting, as it went into more detail with some aspects of the honors program. I’m hoping that, with the move to Sutherland, the honors students won’t have to write an essay about why they want honors housing!

Pitt just has an awesome urban campus with a mix of old and newer buildings. I wish that they did an upper campus walking tour, too!

They use to have an upper campus tour – it went into PA Hall and we were shown a suite. Upper campus is definitely more peaceful than lower campus although I am sure there is plenty of action when events are happening at the Petersen.

i totally agree with you roseperpetual…that’s EXACTLY what i like about pitt!! :)
