I've seen that a couple people have asked this question in the results thread, so I'm asking this in a seperate thread so that someone is more likely to see and answer it.

Were honors program invitations included in the decisions? Does anybody know?

here is what their site says
some 200 accepted applicants to the university are selected each spring to begin Honors work during their first semester in college. In choosing these students, we consider performance on standardized tests (SAT or ACT) as well as high school course selection and grades

then they go on to say this
The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid also coordinates a growing number of non-need-based academic scholarships, including the Jackson, Davie, Pogue, Johnston, and Carolina Scholars scholarships. Most students offered one of these scholarships are also selected for participation in the Honors Program.

I'm afraid if you didn't get the scholarship letter you aren't invited to the honors program

My son (now an in-state freshman honors student) got his acceptance to UNC last January, and was then offered the Morehead Scholarship in early March. His invitation to the honors program did not come until several weeks later. (It was dated March 30.) So, at least in his case, the acceptance to Carolina, the offer of a scholarship, and the invitation to the honors program were all separate events...

^d applied in the RD round (barely made the deadline too). She didn't receive one of the named scholarships, just merit money. It was a letter stating how much, gpa requirements, congrats, etc.... Pretty standard if I recall correctly.

I'm not sure, but I think she missed out when being considered for the big scholarships...some of her applications materials were literally overnighted to meet the RD deadline. But she rec'd the NMF money, which is not a lot. However, UNC-CH is so inexpensive for oos, we bit the bullet and let her turn down several full rides and near fulls to attend. (We don't regret it one bit, though sometimes her dad gets a little misty at the idea of all those lost scholarship dollars...lol!)

Her stats (my best recollection...it's been awhile since I listed them):

SAT I: 750 CR, 760 W, 740 M (one sitting, refused to take it again)
SAT IIs: all in the 700s (took Lit, Bio, Math, etc..)
GPA: 3.75 unwtd, (forgot the exact wtd, but she got those honors cords at graduation which is all she was after... ;) )
APs: Took 8 APs (At time of application, all 5s on AP exams.)
NMF, Nat'l Hispanic Scholar
----state champ/nat'l bronze medalist at humanities competition in DC, three nat'l cheerleading championships, varsity cheerleader, journalism awards, awards from historical societies (state level), award from State Board of Education and about 5 awards from school district Board of Trustees, bunch of school level awards, club(s) officer/president, created the school tutoring program, and so on.....basic stuff. Bunch of volunteer hours... mostly hospitals and as a Ropes 'high ropes' camp counselor (I'm most impressed with this one since heights horrify me.) Also, worked as a waitress every summer.

She loves UNC and Chapel Hill...and is adjusting very well there. Made the women's rowing team (coxswain) and Freshman Council (only 10 selected out of hundreds of apps I hear). She has since given up crew because practices are scheduled during her labs (and she has a LOT of labs). Can't be in two places at once. But she intends to pursue Honor Court when she's eligible.

I spoke with my admissions representative today and he informed me that invitations to the Honors program would be sent later in the month, directly from Honors.

braulta,
If I understand you correctly, they'll be mailed out later in January? By the way does anyone know who the Honors folks are? Are they made up of admissions people, or the office of Scholarships and Aid people, or are they a whole separate committee unto themselves?
sdg13 says that her son didn't hear about the Honors program until late March. Whatever! Just gotta wait and see what happens!

Do Honors students have any dorm advantage? The UNC website says something like "you won't find Honors students living in special dorms", but I've heard from several sources that there are some dorm advantages for Honors students. Anyone know for sure? Just curious.

As I recall, my daughter was allowed to give a dorm preference and pick an honors roommate. They were in E'haus South freshman year. It was a nice opportunity to get good South Campus housing. You can also pick a dorm and potluck an honors roommate as some of her honors friends did.

ahh does anyone know if this applies to out of state too? (the honors letters being sent out next week?). also, does anyone know if they differentiate between out of state and instate? for example, more instate people get it than out of state?
