Hey, has anyone admitted to the Honors Program for 2011-12 received a scholarship notification? I called and the lady who answered the phone said notifications were sent out this last Saturday, and I'm hoping I receive one because a freshman scholarship thru the honors program will be the only way I can afford UW. I'm hoping it's just taking a while to get down here (Arizona) if I did get one, so if anyone else (in-state or OOS) has received notification, please post here!

I got mine in the mail today. I live in eastern Washington.

I live in Western Washington, and I haven’t gotten mine yet. Are you going for sure, chesers? I still haven’t decided. Although, this letter might make the decision for me.

To be honest, before I got my letter, UW was in the middle of the pack – above Reed and Smith, but way below Northwestern and UChicago. But NU and Chicago didn’t give me almost any aid, and my mother almost broke down in (happy) tears when I told her about my Honors scholarship – I got the Mary Gates.

I don’t really want to go to UW, but I’ll probably end up there. Not that I’m not seriously grateful for the scholarship…it’s just frustrating. What’re you deciding b/w, smkolbe3?

Are NU and Chicago not giving you any need based aid? I have a friend who’s going to Chicago and he got plenty of merit/need based aid.

NU’s package was literally the entire cost of attendance in loans.

Chicago gave me $3,000 in grant money and $2,000 in a National Merit Scholarship – which, considering the cost of going there, is a nice gesture but pretty equivalent to nothing.

Chicago tends to be pretty hit-and-miss with their FA. My family’s in a higher tax bracket, but very little in assets, and we anticipate some very high (60K a year-ish) inevitable expenses in the next year or two for adult care. But the FAFSA spit out a very high EFC, and I think Chicago (and NU, to a lesser extent) just did what it could with that number. Your friend probably had the financial stars align in his favor when it came to Chicago. :)

Ah, I see. Well, if I were you I’d still probably go to Chicago :P

@chesers

Does your scholarship show up in your myuw?

@ chesers yeah I’d go to the place I actually want to go too and let someone who wants to go to UW have the scholarship…just my opinion tho congrats on Mary Gates though, that’s really awesome!

Seriously though…don’t take a scholarship from someone who truly wants to go to uw

@tessey – Yes, it does.

@momomomo – I understand where you are coming from, but perhaps I haven’t explained my situation properly: While UW may not be my first choice, it is the most financially viable college (in fact, depending on how outside scholarships and help turn out, perhaps my only financially viable college). I’d love to “give” the scholarship to someone whose first choice is UW, but to tell the truth, I’ll probably need it myself.

My apologies, chesers–it just kind of sounded like you felt you were “above” UW and didn’t want to go there at all, which didnt seem fair to many other honors applicants who could get that scholarship and be ecstatic. But I see where you’re coming from now :)

I get where you’re coming from, chesers. For me, UW will cost almost nothing. I didn’t get a Honors scholarship (Apparently they only gave out 15, so congrats!) but I got an academic award and need-based aid.
Out of the many schools I applied to, all of the in-state schools are the most affordable. So, Seattle U Honors, Western Honors, and Gonzaga. I’m not sure how much Honors matters to me… and I think UW’s size might be a little much. I also don’t exactly see the benefits of the program (for me specifically).

chesers you got full ride to UW through mary gates right? can you post your stats in my thread/chance me? PMing me your stats is ok too
