Anyone attend? S had a conflict.

I went…
received a cool HUHC Flash drive …

So what did you think about the honors college program?

The honors college definitely has its strengths( small class sizes, interesting seminars, large scholarships…etc)! Since I am looking to major in Biochemistry, I will probably forgo this opportunity and attend Stonybrook which is more oriented around math and science.

What do you mean by schlorships for honors program? If you accept are you awarded more money? or just what was stated in the admissions letter? Thanks

@gramie1,

S received 3 different letters from Hofstra re admissions/scholarships:
1 for his acceptance the Hofstra University
1 for his acceptance to the honors college
1 for his scholarship award

You won’t get more money for accepting the HC offer just what they gave you to begin with.

@Hideoo1,

Good luck at SB!

Oh ok thanks…to bad seems like such a small drop in the bucket

@sandkmom,

Hi! I’m a first year student at Hofstra and a member of Honors College. Truly, I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience at Hofstra thus far. Classes are small (my largest has been 35 and my smallest has been 13) and I have been able to develop strong ties with my professors. They are easily accessible via email, office hours and individual appointments. The campus is absolutely beautiful (especially during this time of year when everything is in bloom). The proximity to the city is perfect; on average, I travel to and from about once per week but I love the feeling of coming home to my suburban campus.

In terms of Honors College, there is a real sense of community among the students. I chose to live in the honors residence halls (Liberty and Republic) this year. I enjoyed the experience so much that I have decided to reside in the same place next year. Together we cook meals, study for exams and watch movies in our spare time. The upperclassmen were so welcoming and I look forward to meeting the members of the incoming class of 2014.

Honors students also form lasting friendships because we all complete a year-long program called Culture and Expression (C&E). The program covers a wide array of topics under the humanities and social science headings. C&E is challenging and rewarding. Our discussions sections are capped at 20 students and the classes are fascinating. The program is designed to simultaneously fulfill Honors College and University requirements. Therefore, students do not fall behind.

In addition to our professors, Honors College has five Faculty Mentors. These mentors coordinate activities both on and off of campus. For instance, I have attended various student shows accompanied by dinner at a local restaurant, The Museum of Art and Design, an informational tour of China Town, a Mets game, the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center, a kayaking trip, Broadway’s Wicked, a historical tour of Greenwich Village, an Islander’s game, Avatar in 3D, the Titanic Artifact Exhibition, the NYC Ballet and the list continues!

This first year has flown by but I have done so much here at Hofstra. I can’t wait to see what the next three years have in store for me!

Best of luck!

@sandkmom

Do you feel ok sharing what exactly was your son’s conflict about?

Hi, useraverage and thanks for that informative post! It is sure to be of value to others considering HUHC or interested in applying next year!

My S had a scheduling conflict which is why he didn’t make the dinner…but in the meantime, since I last posted, he has decided to attend another school.

Best of luck for your continued success at Hofstra! :)
