Honors Discussion

I tried to join the Honors chat today but it said I had to download software? I wasn’t on my computer so I didn’t proceed. I would have asked one or two questions.

Congrats @pickledginger and @ririgirl great news! Nothing here but haven’t seen D yet. We are in state. Guess that mid March date was off!

Thank you. The scholarship offer is less than his offers from other schools so I’m not sure what he’ll decide but still grateful for any scholarship.

My DD was also offered the $12k/year Presidential Scholarship. This puts Maryland a little closer cost-wise to her offers from Ohio State and Penn State.

I put this ? on the Class of 2033 thread as well:
Anyone who recently got their UMD ID - did it really take 48 hours to access the site? S got caught up in the IT crash yesterday and just signed on today. Someone mentioned looking at Coalition ,then checklist but only his Honors acceptance and his LLP is listed there. OOS and need some merit $ or UMD has to come off the list.

For the students that were placed in EIP, you might enjoy reading this “spotlight” on a current student for Women’s History Month http://eip.umd.edu/student-profiles/eip-student-profile-brooke-nesselt.html

@maryversity , Thanks! I’ll show that to my D. She will be in the EIP.

Hello,
Today My son got an email invite for honors college chat that congratulating his admission for honor college. He never officially got an acceptance email from UMD. logged in coalition ,no status there . Anyone else in the same boat?

@umagopi99 - Call Admissions tomorrow to find out what this means

thanks @SoofDad !

We called the admin office. They said my son got in UMD honors. They will send notification. Other than that we don’t have any information.Hoping for a good merit scholarship.fingers crossed

Hi, I got into the honors college and was put into University Honors. Right now my admission letter says Public Health as my major, but I am probably going to change my major the more I think about it. Anyways, if I choose to switch my major, will that mean that I am no longer in the honors college? Is your major in some ways tied to your admission in the Honors College? Thanks

I’m not 100 percent sure, but I doubt it. My DD is in the Honors College for next year and there has been no mention in the materials or on Admitted Students Day that changing majors affects Honors College membership. Changing majors is pretty common.

@aag2000 - Your major is not tied to being in the Honors College. 4 years ago, my D applied Undecided (she had no major when she started) and she was admitted into the Honors College. Some of the Honors programs may be more valuable to students with certain majors, such as ACES, but a specific major is not required.

My son is in Honors EIP next year. I thought I saw something about an orientation or open house for Honors Students that is held in the summer, but I now cannot locate this on the UMD website, He is already registered for the newly admitted student open house. Does anyone have info re: something over summer for Honors Students? Thanks.

Hey @einyfine http://www.orientation.umd.edu/dates.html

Go to the orientation page, and then to the admitted school. Within the school, you’ll see dates, and some are specifically for honors. Good Luck!

Hi I have been admitted to UMD for computer science and the ACES program, and I have a few questions.

  1. About what percent of classes you take are H-version or honors courses with the smaller class sizes?
  2. How easy is it to get an internship and what percent of ACES LLP students get internships?
  3. Do you have any pictures or know a place where I can find pictures of the Prince Frederick dorm rooms? I haven't seen any pictures of the actual dorm rooms in PFH.
  4. Is the huge size of computer science at UMD a problem?

Thanks for the help!

@Swooshcheese 1. Personally, I haven’t taken an H-version or honors course yet (I chose not to) outside of the ACES curriculum. My friends have, though, and the CS class they took last semester had 30 students total in the lecture/discussion. Honors seminars have about 20 students in them.

  1. I think about 50% of ACES freshmen have internships this summer. I, myself, have one! Depending on how willing you are to network and reach out to companies on your own, the ease of getting an internship can differ. Getting an internship isn't just about being in ACES, but also how far you go to get one yourself.
  2. DM me your email and I'll send a picture/video!
  3. Not at all. I've honestly never had a problem with it that I don't think I wouldn't get at another top CS school.

@whenyoubelieve Thanks for the info. I would love to get a video of the dorms, but I don’t think I can DM yet because I don’t have 15 posts yet. Maybe it would let me DM you if you DM me first.
