Honors Dorms or ELL?

Hi Aggies,

My son is looking at dorms at A&M for next fall. He received a letter letting him know he can be in the Honors Dorm if he signs up by April 1st. I have also read about the Engineering Living Learning Communities. A student at A&M told me the Honors dorms have a lot of video gamers and nerdy activities, but it was a fun, nice place. My son is not really a gamer. I know if my son wants another dorm he needs to go ahead and send in his forms etc.

We don't know anything about the Engineering community, although that might be too many engineering majors all in one place? ;) However, the ELL says there are tutors available. Is this something students utilize a great deal?

Any first hand knowledge out there?

Thanks!

Howdy,

I am a freshman living in the honors dorm McFadden and I know several people who live in Mosher for the Engineering Learning Community.

Someone I talked to actually said the LLC does “nothing” but I’m not that naive. I’m sure the LLC does something and has some benefit, the person I talked to just probably does not take advantage of it.

That said, I definitely believe there is a lot more stuff going on in general in the honors dorms. For example, the whole first week before school starts there are activities planned by sophomores living in the dorm and this is a great way to meet other people. And honestly, I would wager that at least half of the people living in the honors dorms are engineering majors anyway.

There are definitely nerdy video game people in the honors dorms but a lot of people are just great students with diverse interests. For example, I spent yesterday hanging out with some friends in the other honors dorm, Lechner, playing some video games before watching the football games. The rooms are really spacious and nice, and don’t feel as cramped as the southside LLC dorms do.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, I would be happy to try to answer them!

Yea! I appreciate reading your experiences stbs!

We just found out and signed up for an overnight visit on Feb 19th in the honors dorm. I’m so glad he can experience it for himself! He will also go to a game (basketball, maybe) and attend an honors class, meet with the EE department, etc. I think it will help him in making up his mind about being an Aggie.

My husband and I are old aggies, but we’re trying not to influence his decision too much!

:) Thanks!

I forgot to ask…are Lechner and McFadden similar sized rooms? Would he need to ask for one over the other, or is that decision made by dorm admin?

Thanks!

Hi! I got accepted to A&M like a month ago and applied for the honors dorms too, although i want to major in biomedical science. My mom is really pushing me to be in the honors dorms, and i just want to make sure it’s a good idea. I plan on partying quite a bit, you know, and don’t want to be surrounded by people who don’t. Of course I’m also very concerned with my grades, and always have been. But it seems nice that they have the private bathrooms. I just want to make sure I’m making the right choice here. So would McFadden/Lechner be a good choice for me?

Do the people in honors dorms party less? Are there dorm parties there? How many people from honors dorms rush? I’m majoring in business and would probably live in an honors dorm if I decide to go to A&M. I think I’ll be staying overnight on Feb 19th too.

My bad, kinda forgot about this thread.

Anyway, the rooms in Lechner and McFadden are exactly the same. Generally speaking people in the honors dorm don’t party, but there are a few that do. I party more than most who live here, mostly with people living outside of the dorm but I still appreciate the nice rooms and environment that comes with living in the honors dorm. Don’t expect any parties actually in the dorm, I haven’t heard of anything like that.

People in the honors dorms do a lot of stuff together but it isn’t the typical college party/drinking fare. To me it’s still fun though. In general I enjoy the company of the intelligent/fun dorm people during the week while Friday/Saturday nights can be spent with the crazier partying types.

And to the question of rushing, I know a few girls in Lechner and McFadden who are in sororities, but I can’t say I know any frat guys who live here.
