Honors Dorms

Alright, I'm pretty confident I am going to attend Uconn, but I was disappointed because when I did the Husky-for-a-day program I didn't get to see the Shippee dorms!!! I visited my friends who have dorms in Towers (Hale) and Northwestern. They both seemed pretty nice, but how do the honors dorm stack up in comparison?

Additionally, is the walk really that much further? It seems like the honors dorms are isolated from most of the campus because they are across the main road.

If you could leave me any suggestions for housing (I am in the honors program), that would be great. Btw my name is Isaac and I am an intended bio/pre-med major. Thanks in advance!

Hey! If you can, I'd suggest you come and visit UConn this Saturday for our Open House. There are going to be tours of Shippee Hall... come and check it out for yourself. I've seen Towers dorms and I live in Shippee. I find the Honors dorm to be a great option for freshmen. If you are lucky and get a room in the c wing (like 1/3 of the rooms), then you will have a private bathroom, which is a great benefit for any student, let alone a freshman. Feel free to send me a message if u have any more questions about the honors program etc.

i just got home from the open house and took a tour of shippee. the dorms are really nice, but i am just worried about possibly missing out on the full college experience if i chose the housing at shippee. i got the feeling that there is less partying at shippee. this might be a superficial concern, but i want college to be working with a lot of fun mixed in! can anyone tell me if my vibe of less partying at shippee is correct?

Well i actually have the same concern, but i figure that there will be some people that want to party. I was disappointed to find out that the honors students had no choice in terms of dorms, we have to stay at shippee.

I just got home from the open house as well, hmm maybe i saw you there number7? (I was the indian guy, took the shippee tour at like 2:30 pm). I wore ripped abrecrombie jeans..

also..dlim you are incorrect, we can dorm anywhere we want, we do not have to dorm at shippee (it's just there specifically for honors students, do to its perks)

Really? I dunno this is what I was told at the honors booth at the resource fair, but I'm sure that the lady could have been mistaken. I thought that she was was the head of the honors thing, but I guess not haha.

So what did u think of the actual dorms? My friend's dorm in Hale was quite spacious and his neighbors seemed really friendly. Although there may be less partying ppl in the honors dorm, I'm sure a good-sized group still exists and its not like you are bounded to your own dorm...you can always walk to a friend's place in northwest or something.

I mean, it doesn't seem like you'd miss too much of the college experience even if freshman year was a bit less social. After freshman year, most honors kids (According to my tour guide) move into West according to my group tour guide and it seemed like quite an ideal location.

the dorms themselves were really nice. i didn't view any other dorms so i can't compare...but they seem spacious and 1/3 of the dorms (which are in the C wing) have a private bathroom, so you have a good chance of getting one of those. i guess whatever reservations i have about the whole partying thing are trumped by the fact that the dorms are so nice. i'll just have to deal with a trade off.

I'm sure that the partying thing isn't that big of a problem. I mean you want to party, I want to party and we're just two possible honors kids. There are probably more honors kids out there that are thinking the same thing.

To be honest with you, Shippee honors kids have kinda gotten a reputation across campus as partying a lot. There is a big group of honors freshmen who are really into the party scene. People are always going out on weekends to parties. There is definitely that group in Shippee as there is in any other dorm. If you want to party, dont be reserved about being in Shippee at all. If you arent into the party scene, Shippee is also great because there are also the non party type.

Thanks tashi, that actually makes me feel better about going to Shippee.

Is there a housing form we have to fill out or do we not get any preferences on roomates?

Yeah, on the housing application you can fill out a roomate request, but not dorm request.

When do/did we receive this application? Are the dorms for honor students singles, doubles, triples, or suite style?

Applications are done online, but you can request a paper application.

https://secure.sa.uconn.edu/rsl/applications.reslife//

You'll need you're NETID which can be retrieved at:

https://netid.uconn.edu/findnetid.php Once they get your $150 acceptance fee, it will be in the system.

thanks, can any one provide an answer to my other question, too?

I'm pretty sure freshman stay at Shippee which is doubles and non suites. I'm not 100% though.

What's a non-suite?

Rooms that aren't suites, lol. Basically any room without private or shared bathrooms.

ooooohhhhhhhh....
