Honors Experience Day

Sadly, I will not be able to attend this Saturday because I had already made plans with my family. Is anyone on cc planning on going? Could they share their experience for those of us who weren't able to go? :)

I’ll try to post back here after tomorrow.

Sorry you’re unable to make it! I’ll do my best to let you know anything you might miss.

Thanks! I hope you have a good time.

I was really impressed with the presentation they put together. It seems as if they really do treat their CHP students well.

One point they tried to make time and time again is that CHP is like a small liberal arts college inside of a large research university (UCI). The CHP students stick together, support each other, and try to make the most out of their college experience.

The general information session (for all schools / majors) wasn’t hugely informative (in my opinion, anyway). Quite a few administrators told us about the program, about research opportunities, and a one faculty member gave sample lecture excerpt from the social science core.

The honors housing was nice, although it seemed like the housing options at Mesa are nicer (the other housing area on campus). That being said, it seemed like the honors housing had more of a community feel.

I went to the engineering school presentation, but I’m not sure where you would have gone! In the engineering presentation, a professor focused mainly on research opportunities, an accelerated BS/MS program, and on the programs themselves. He went over the size of enrollment of each engineering discipline (although I don’t remember what the enrollments were). Finally he concluded with a panel of engineering students who were willing to answer questions from the audience.

Sorry if that’s not a great summary, but it’s all I’ve got! Sorry you couldn’t be there:)

I meant to reply to this thread but I posted in the wrong Honors Experience Day thread…oops! Here’s my other post-

I went there not expecting to like the school very much- UCI isn’t my first choice. But I was surprised by how much I did like it, because it’s a very nice campus, and all the students I spoke to outside of the tour were friendly and engaging, with pretty fascinating research interests. I enjoyed the general information session because of the topics two of the professors discussed, especially Elizabeth Loftus’s “false memory”. I was less impressed with the Humanities information session, which put me to sleep a little, but not everything can be fun and games.

I think UCI did a great job of using the CHP as a way to draw in strong students who might consider CHP at UCI over the regular program at, say, UCLA. The housing tour was nice since I’ve never been to see dorms at another school (Middle Earth seemed a bit cramped like other people have said, but it’s called Middle Earth- that’s cool enough on its own) and they put a large emphasis on opportunities to study abroad, which personally I found really appealing.

The three things that made the biggest impression were the students, the campus itself (very big, lots of trees, great open spaces), and the study-abroad program. Overall it was a good program and UCI is a very nice place. Before going, I wasn’t very interested in attending UCI at all, but I think the Honors day went a long way towards convincing me to consider it.
