D received an invitation to attend HF weekend! Anyone else planning to attend?

I got an invitation for Leadership, but not Honors…which is the one I really wanted and had been wishing for. I needed the $12k to be able to attend, and wanted to live in the Honor’s dorm. Biggest leadership scholarship is only a few thousand anyway. I am extremely disappointed and also confused since I thought I was a better candidate for Honors than Leadership but oh well… Good Luck to everyone else.

My daughter was invited to attend for both Leadership and Communications. She is very excited and looking forward to attending fellows weekend in March!

Are all the different fellows competitions on the same weekend?

Fellows weekend is for all the Fellows programs.

Thank you. My D is not 100% sure she’s going to attend the weekend. She has several offers that are “better” than Elon and would reduce our out-of-pocket expense to well below Elon’s even with the HF award. She is concerned that if she accepts the invitation knowing she may not attend Elon that she would be taking an opportunity away from another student. Does anyone know whether Elon will invite the next student on the list if my D turns down the offer?

Typically offers are extended to a larger number of students than the fixed number of scholarships, because there are bound to be some students offered the scholarship that ultimately decide on a different school (like my D did). So there’s a built-in buffer, and if they have more than expected decline the scholarship, then yes, they could contact students who weren’t initially offered the money. They’re going to make sure the fellows programs have enough students to make them worthwhile.

I didn’t apply to the Honors, but I was invited for the only one I applied to, Communications! SO excited!
But anyways, I have a feeling Elon understands that not everyone has the time and money to come down for the weekends and consider that when they send out invitations.

Thanks for the responses. Does anyone know how many potential Honors Fellows show up for the weekend? I see they award 40 scholarships, but I don’t know if it’s 40 out of 100 or 500?? The answer to that question will help us decide whether we should attend or not…

Well four years ago when my son was applying they received 1400 applications for all Fellows programs. Half of those were invited to the weekend and I believe over 600 came to the weekend. Not sure how many of those were just Honors applicants. If you really can not make the weekend they will make allowances.

We can make the weekend. Just trying to decide if it’s worth the effort. I like the idea of on campus scholarship competitions. I just think those invited should have a realistic chance at the award. It seems to me that any competition with more than twice as many invitees as winners is not really being used to pick winners as it is being used by the school as a recruitment tool. IMHO
