Honors Fellows

I know it's early, but how many folks applied for this scholarship? Does anyone have any inside info that is not on the website? How many kids get invited? Is it a fun or stressful weekend? Anything else?

My son applied for a business fellow. The weekend was a lot of fun with a little bit of stress involved. There are around 600 kids invited for all the fellows programs, so they get to meet many people and it is very social. There is an essay and interview component and that is where the stress comes in. The weekend serves as an orientation also for both the students and parents. It was a wonderful weekend all around and well run.

Thanks for the info. Do you have any idea how many of the 600 were offered one of the fellows awards?

I believe there were 200 invited to the honors fellows weekend with 40 fellows each year.

I don’t think my daughter found it stressful. I had a great weekend. We both left Elon knowing she would go there if she got the honors fellowship.

^^^Well…did she win?

Are you asking about the non-major-specific Honors Fellows? If so, the goal is to bring in 40 each year. Not sure how many they offer above 40 to ensure they net 40 (D was offered Honors Fellows last year but turned it down for honors at a different school).

There are also major-specific Fellows programs that also offer scholarships, such as Teaching, Communications, Arts & Sciences fellows, Leadership fellows - each takes a certain amount of students, and all participate in the same Fellows weekend visit/interview/seminar/essay for acceptance.

The Elon Fellowships are fantastic opportunities for students but most do not have a scholarship tied to them. They are extended learning experiences for students that can be more valuable than $$. The weekend was a great experience for D and I and was the deciding factor in Elon being her first choice (even though she was Not awarded a fellowship)

How many fellows get money and how much depends on the program. All 50 Elon College Fellows (Arts & Sciences), 5 Communications fellows, 7 Business Fellows each receive $4,000 - $4,500 per year as well as a $1,000 research grant. 20 Teaching fellows receive $4,500/year plus enhanced study abroad opportunities. These awards are cumulative with any Presidential and Elon Engagement monies. There’s more money in Honors, but some for other fellows.
