Honors General Chem

Does anyone recommend honors general chem as opposed to the regular one? I read on here that I should simply take regular since no one will even know I took honors when people look at my transcript.

People will be able to tell that you took honors on your transcript because it lists the titles of your courses on your Brandeis transcript so it will say CHEM 15A Honors General Chemistry. That being said, I haven’t heard the best things about the honors professor. The regular gen chem professor is different this year than it has been in the past, so I don’t know anything about him, but you will have 200 people in your class to get help from as opposed to only a small group.

really? everything i read told me that those numbers are pretty much uninterpretable and it goes down as the same course on my transcript…

I don’t know. I’m really good at Chem (semifinalist for USACO) and got a 5 on the APs, but I’m torn because I don’t know what the caliber of students/grading will be in honors when compared to regular.

on ASD, they said the requirements for honors chem for freshman were a 4 or 5 on the AP.
They also said you get much more attention because the class is around 20 people, compared to 150 for gen chem.
You should talk to your advisor for more info but I’m considering taking honors as well based on that info.

how much “weeding out” do you see in freshman chem (directed at any current students)?

I heard (this is entirely NOT based on facts, by the way) that about a quarter of your class will enter as pre-med and only about half or less of those students will actually apply to med school. And I think there’s quite a bit of “weeding out” in general chemistry, but really the class is designed to be difficult so that you can think about whether or not you are really dedicated to become a doctor (or a chem major, I guess), It’s not really competitive, just difficult, so if you’re serious and willing to put in a lot of work you shouldn’t worry about the “weeding out” process.

In response to the honors question - if you took AP Chemistry and did well and feel like you really understand those concepts, you’ll probably be wasting your time in regular general chemistry (although you might get a really good grade). I don’t know anything about the professor teaching honors next semester but my guess is you would be happier there than in regular gen chem.

If any of you want more information about chemistry placement, send me a message and I can give you the email addresses of some chemistry professors who helped me a lot with the same issue last year.

^ Ok so one question then. Is the syllabus for Honors Chem the same as General Chem? Or is Honors Chem a bit physical/analytical chemistry based (like at other schools that have the same option)?

hey I emailed the professor. She said that if a student already took a college level course in high school or an AP course, it is best to take honors chem. Also, it is easier to transfer from honors chem to general chem. Moreover after the two weeks shopping period it is almost impossible to transfer from general chem to honors chem if you get bored in general chem.
