How difficult is it for Honors students to get on-campus housing after the freshman year? I saw a note on the Honors website about a lottery. If a student finds out in February that they did not get on-campus housing, is it difficult to find a nice place to stay off-campus by then?

On that note, are there many apartment complexes on a bus line to campus (and grocery stores) or would a car then be necessary?

After the first year, honors students can live in honors residence or in apartments on Horseshoe. It is a lottery, but for those 2 places, only for honors students. It seems this year that all honors students who wanted to stay on campus did. Ones who had trouble were ones who didn’t want to stay in dorm but didn’t get chosen for horseshoe or ones who wanted to live other places on campus with other (non-honor) friends, which dropped them out of honors lottery into general lottery where had less priority. I don’t think anyone who was happy to stay in dorm had a problem…

Note though, they have changed the housing system this year. Honors should still have priority for these dorms, but still not sure how that will play out. The new time frame (apply by Dec 1) should let people know earlier if they get their pick. Haven’t dealt with off-campus housing but there is a site under housing that students can sign up for links and information and I would encourage students to go to any question and answer sessions sponsored by housing or honor.
