Should my son live in Honors housing at U Michigan or live with all the other freshman for social reasons? I'm not sure if he will miss out on the real freshman experience if he is in Honors housing. Has anyone had this experience?

If he can live on South Quad, the convenience is fantastic and so is the fun. Shipman and Honors freshmen live there, too.

My experience goes back several decades, but I enjoyed living in Honors housing at Michigan. I met a lot of really smart, really interesting and very quirky people who formed the core of my social network all the way through college, some of whom are still close friends today. And there is something positive about living with the same people you’re taking small Honors classes with, a little more like the small-college experience within a big university. At the same time, I didn’t feel at all cut off from broader campus social networks; it’s a matter of concentric circles.

South Quad is an ideal location, adjacent to the Union, across the street from the Diag (the heart of the main campus), half a block from both the Undergraduate and Graduate libraries, close to the State Street commercial district and downtown Ann Arbor.

No, I don’t think your student will miss out on anything if he lives in honors housing! The honors college’s section accounts for 35% of the students housed in South Quad and 20% of the students in Couzens Hall. It’s not as if either is a “nerd dorm.”

I know you’re asking about Michigan specifically, but my s lives in the honors community at IU and LOVES it! Whatever schools my younger boys choose, I’m going to really encourage them to look into the honors dorm. My freshman s told be a couple weeks into the semester,“Everybody is really smart, and really nice!”

I was accepted into the honors college at Michigan for next year and am curious as to whether someone can give me some feedback about what this program is like? Also, how would one rank the honors program at Michigan versus the ivies and also schools like Northwestern? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks
