honors housing for freshman?

can anyone provide any info if you are an incoming freshman accepted into the honor program.

Is it in the freshman dorms but on a separate floor/wing or is it somewhere else.

Our next big decision will be about housing choices.

I talked to my daughter last night and there are no dorms or areas specifically designated for Honors Programs students. Thay aren't housed separately especially after Freshman year. There is some rooms in Campion Towers for the ALpha program and she would recommend Hopkins Court which is where she lived her freshman year. It is a non drinker dorm for more serious type students. She could try to request a fellow Honors student as a roommate when she does the survey. I would pursue this whole issue with Admissions when you go there.

Her roommate is in the Honors program and admits its overrated and more to dress up her future Resume. They take an extra course each semester and thats about it. She still carries a 4.0 in the Honors program so she is a bright girl.

BRavens
Thanks so much for the infomation I have asked my d to start thinking about how she is going to fill out the housing survey when she receives it. She prefers to be around those that are of her academic equal and has had some summer roomates (3 weeks) that really presented her with insight to living with someone that has different values, thoughts and attitudes than her.

She will fill out the Survey online during Orientation in late June or early July. This survey is very good at pairing people with like interests and goals. Tell her to tell the truth in it. Also, look at Hopkins Court on Saturday. It is the first dorm on the right when you walk across the bridge over Charles St. My daughter liked living there last year.

My D and I attended the "honors program" session on April 12. The director of the program encouraged "honors students to live in the honors dorm." We visited the Hopkins Court and found it very nice. My D likes what she saw!

do you know anything about the other freshman dorms?

We checked all other dorms. They are very nice!

Loyola Dorms have always rated among the best in the country and as high as #2 to I believe Pomona which is on the ocean in California. Hard to beat that view! BLN and Melby Mom=Any decisions yet? The clock is running. LOL

My D wants to visit UVA and I will take her to Charlottesville this coming Friday.

She has rejected College of William & Mary, Villanova U., Virginia Tech, James Madison U. and VCU (full ride). I hope I will be able to let you know next week.

BRavens You mentioned your daughter is a writer for the school paper. How does one go about getting a position like that or do they allow anyone to just submit articles? Did she do it her freshman year as well?

BRaven - D is definately going to Loyola. Sent in the deposit and everything. We will be going this weekend to the accepted student event and scholarship dinner. I have been reading over the curriculum and have lots of things to find out (laptop specifics, engineering/honors scheduling, cost of an average meal, micro fridge, cost of washer/dryers)

My D is a hugh reader so she liked that some of the dorms were by the new library as she sees herself there alot. i am sure she will get plenty to read though thru her classes. She is planning Engineering Science - Electrical. We will see if we can visit the dorm you mentioned and the others so she can see the differnces. I know there is a random assignment but since we were there a few times, I think we saw them all. She is very adaptable and adjusts as needed so whereever she is assigned, she'll do fine. She has been so busy with school assignments, no time to think about roommate stuff yet.

Dunny,

My D is the editor of her HS newspaper and she plans to continue in college (at least as a staff writer first). If she attends Loyola, I will let you know .

My daughter went to the school paper, expressed her interest in movies etc. There was an opening for a movie critic and she was "hired" as free labor. Its nice getting free press passes to movie previews and going with her when I can. She is taking me to the Harold and Kumar movie next week. I can't wait. LOL FYI, editors are paid positions but not alot of pay. She is the Arts and Society editor next year. Dorms are not totally random. The survey matches you not only with a roommate but allows you to pick your preferences to dorm you want. If your deposit is in early she would probably get her first choice for dorms. I recoomend buying her laptop from Loyola because they will only servive laptops that you buy from teh. The medium priced one is a nice laptop. Don't worry about the meal plan, its no big deal.

The washer/dryers she can use by swiping her ID which becomes her ID, security key to enter buildings, meal plan card and other cash for books and other stuff. Guess who gets to go online and restock the money portion of her ID? LOL Loyola services the laptops you buy from them. I can't type.
You bring your own micro/fridge. We split with her roommate freshman yaer. She brought the fridge, we brought the micro. You should contact your roommate in advance to discuss stuff like that.

My daughter actually prefers the other side of Charles St to live because it is more Central to campus. Hopkins Ct last year and Seton Apts this year and next. She works at the Library and takes the shuttle to it at night.

You get to pick your choice of dorm for freshman? This is done at orientation after filling out roommate survey? What does your daughter say about the dorms by the library/ is one better than the other?

Couldn't make either accepted student day so that is why I'm asking

I would think it depends on what you are looking for. The dorms by the Library are freshman only. If you go there I would choose the new one. The dorms by the Library are where the party crowd tends to be but its good there too!

As per what we heard this past weekend (at the honors session), Freshman honors housing will be moved to East Residence this upcoming years. You don't have to be in the honors program to request honors housing. (One student we spoke with who was doing tours, didn't know about it though, so who really knows ) It was said that quiet time starts earlier.

Also, 5 students talked about their experience with the honors program and it was pretty amazing what some of them have accomplished or are working on. Appears opportunities are there if you want them to really do something .
