Hi! I am a prospective Plan 2 student and am comparing UT versus Vanderbilt (full ride) and BU (full ride). I would be living in the honors dorms and have one big concern:

How loud are the honors dorms? I go to bed at 10 pm and am up at 5 am to go running. I am very studious and am not interested in the party/drinking scene at all. How often are there parties? I know I sound prude and un-fun, but I am concerned about not being able to get 8-9 hours of sleep (I am a training athlete) and not being able to find quiet study places for my double major, International Relations & Plan II, and minor in Turkish.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! A couple of people have told me that I shouldn't be worried because everybody in college sleeps less and parties more, but for the sake of this example please assume that I would continue the way I train/study now.

Nobody parties in the honors dorms. You are more likely to hear people playing video games and laughing at board games than hearing drunk people.

You’d be surprised how much partying goes on, and how much DOESN’T.

I’m a prospective Plan II’er and Dean’s Scholar. I stayed in the dorms overnight about a week ago. From what I experienced, it was pretty chill and subdued. On a Friday night at 10:30, it was very quiet in the dorms. Granted, my experience was very limited, but I don’t think you’ll have a problem at all.

Which way are you leaning, if you don’t mind my asking?

It’s simply not true that no one parties here. LOTS of people do. I mean, maybe fewer than in other dorms, but don’t get the impression that just because we’re honors students means we all go to bed at 9:30 every night and stay in our rooms quietly reading all the time.

That said, I’ve never been woken up by noise here (probably because I go to sleep so late on the weekends but not because I party). In any case, it’s not “loud” here unless you get a really REALLY loud neighbor (like mine). And this is Blanton we’re talking about. Andrews and Carothers (the other two honors dorms) are eerily quiet all the time. And Blanton is very, very quiet during the week.

But I wouldn’t worry too much about it. ANY dorm at ANY university will have the typical issues with people drinking on the weekends and then coming back drunk and being loud.

@saxplayer - between the three schools, I am exactly in the middle. I am about ready to put all the schools on the wall, throw a dart and go to whichever school the dart lands on.

I come home at four in the morning a lot of nights from partying and doing crazy stuff. It’s nice to come home from the noise because it’s usually always pretty quiet here. I’m inside the Q right now ‘‘studying’’ lol, and the most noise is some people watching a basketball game but the volume is sort of quiet. But no really, even on the weekends, I still think it’s quiet. Yeah, yeah it is. There are tons of study nooks around the dorms and theres the Joynes reading room that’s at a constant mute. Once in a while there’ll be people making smores outside or something like that, but that’s rare. It’s not bad here though. I like it.

If you want 8-9 hours of sleep than how is going to bed at 10 and waking up at 5 accomplishing that? That is 7 hours, anyways you should lighten up a bit.

Let’s get one thing straight – “Parties” don’t happen in the dorms. Period. Especially not the honors quad.
