Honors housing question

My daughter is awaiting her decision from FSU and we plan to immediately apply for her housing choices. Here's our dilemma:

She really wants honors housing. However, if she does not get accepted into honors then she plans to petition based on her extremely strong senior grades and gpa (which have improved over the gpa on her transcripts). According to the honors website she should submit a separate housing application if requesting honors through petition. Does this mean that she should submit housing requests based on alternative housing along with a deposit AND honors housing along with another deposit?

We are just wanting to be prepared for any possibility. Thanks for any help!

The first thing to do is get a low priority number by applying for housing immediately upon acceptance (or before, if quirks in the software timing work to your advantage).

With this low number you then have more options, which should allow sufficient flexibility to address the Honors question in the intervening period.

If Honors doesn’t work out then she has a good chance to get the dorm she wants regardless - excepting Landis, of course.

I’d also suggest working with Honors and Admissions to discuss the issue in detail and in advance. A personal visit to do this would be in order, I would think. Hopefully it is not too late.

@parent2noles, What if we apply and pay for housing but don’t get accepted? You said we may be able to apply before acceptance if there are quirks in the software timing?

It shouldn’t be too late. According to the honors section of the FSU website we have until 4/1/12 to petition for honors if she doesn’t make it in. Of course, housing is a different story so we definitely want to secure a Landis spot to hold if she has to petition. I’ll probably give them a call and find out some details. Thanks!

for honors do they offer it to you or did you have to apply for it?

Here is what the FSU website says "Standard Admission
Acceptance into the University Honors Program is by invitation only, and is based on an evaluation of the student’s entire record (including strength of academic curriculum) that has been submitted to the University during the general admission process.

Letters of invitation to the University Honors Program are sent by mail approximately one week after notification of general admission to the University. Invited students must respond in writing by the stated deadlines to finalize acceptance to the program."

Class,

I don’t believe you can apply for housing if you are not accepted. It appears the systems (Admissions and Housing) are linked. The quirks refer to a positive Housing access indicating admission. Sometimes Housing appears to allow access first, but this could also be explained by network traffic slowing access to the Admissions status page, as thousands and thousands try to ascertain their status at the same time.

My priority number is 3,039 and I got into honors. It said that females who applied to suite-style dorms and have a number over 3,000 have a low chance of getting in, and that I should change my preferences.

Do you think that this will be different for me because of honors? Landis and Gilchrist are my first and second choices.

tosney-- based on my experience last year, it might in fact be different for those in honors who are requesting Landis because I received an email from housing mid-summer letting me know that there were rooms still available in Landis if I wanted to switch (I am in honors but had requested a different dorm to be in an LLC).
