honors housing

as an honors student at the business school, are the mccormick suites on busch or the lynton towers south on livingston more optimal? I heard that mccormick were nice rooms but that livingston was recently renovated. Also know that business school is on livingston but I am thinking about double majoring with a degree at SAS, so the campus makes no difference to me really.

McCormick is air cooled in September and late April/May, which is really nice. You live in a suite with three double bedrooms , a bathroom, and a common room. The building is typically honors SAS students in either freshman or sophomore year. The setup is very nice, but it tends to be a bit more antisocial as people keep the suite door closed and typically only associate with their suitemates.

The Towers are older and lack air conditioning, but they tend to be more lively and social since its mostly freshmen and the rooms are doubles with a common bathroom on the floor rather than suites. The whole building isn’t honors housing, only a certain floor I believe. Livingston also has the best dining hall and a number of new amenities, like the movie theater, Starbucks, Henry’s Diner, etc. Obviously the brand new business building is on Livi as well.

So I wouldn’t say there’s an optimal choice, it really depends on what you want.

Wow, thanks so much for the info! I put mccormick as my first choice and the Towers as my second. Anyway, I was also wondering about the peer mentoring program. I just filled out a questionnaire requesting one, but I am not exactly sure how students utilize the resource. Are you familiar with the program at all?

Sorry, I’ve never heard of it. I volunteered to be a mentor for an engineering mentor program and the way that worked was essentially the onus was on the first year to consult the mentor whenever they wanted to. My mentee never reached out to me after our initial meeting, so I never did anything lol. So my guess would be that if you are proactive and ask your mentor lots of questions then you could get a lot out of it.

My son was a peer mentor this year. He had three students that he emailed occasionally to see how they were doing. He met one or two for lunch on a couple of occasions. The third one dropped out of the program. I think it would be good if you need to ask advice or questions about your program from a student who has been there. Don’t be afraid to email your mentor with questions. My son was happy to offer any advice he could regarding work load, professors, class choices, etc.

Thanks for your replies. I have another unrelated question that I was hoping you guys could answer as well  How hard is the spanish placement test?

turns it out it wasn’t that bad. to anybody who sees this thread in the future - the spanish placement test is comprised of 80 multiple choice questions (4 options. 20 of these questions have to do with listening comprehension i.e. listen to stuff on a tape (or in this case boombox lol) and answer accordingly on scantron. the other 60 are composed of questions that rise in difficulty from simple vocab to complicated reading comprehension.

Soo apparently I got housed in Brett Hall. Any honors students on here want to trade lol? Apparently Livi and McCormick got filled up. How hard will it be to live on College Ave and study on Livingston/Busch?

Brett Hall is actually one of the dorms a lot of people want to live in. Getting to Busch and Livingston from College Ave is fairly easy. The LX bus to Livi runs very frequently and you have the A or H to get to Busch.

How did you find out you were in Brett? I just got a letter telling me that the Buell apartments (which are supposed to be graduate apartments), will be cleaning on a certain day … I found that strange as I have not received notice on housing yet… maybe that was my notice?

No I got that email too, but that does not mean anything to you.

Basically what you have to do to find out your housing situation is one of two things:

First, go to the housing charge on your term bill. Multiply it by two. Then, match it with one of the prices on this page: <a href=“Rates and Billing – Residence Life”>http://ruoncampus.rutgers.edu/facilities/rates-and-billing</a>. Basically, my housing charge * 2 was $7163 so I knew that since I chose honors housing I would be in Brett. You can apply the same logic to see what dorm you will get into.

Finally, to check whether or not this is correct, go to your Rutgers Portal (Google it). Log in, click on Welcome Tab, and then scroll down and click on Personal Info. Then click on Student Online Directory Management and check what your PO address is. If it says RPO, you are on College Ave. If it says any other letter and then PO, you are on the campus to which that first letter corresponds. E.g. LPO => Livingston, DPO => Douglass, etc.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, it does help a lot. Didn’t we put downpayments in when we made selections, and also pay for meal plans? My bill seems like I am being overbilled.
