Honors Housing?

So whats the deal with honors housing? Do you recommend living with honors or not? Pros/cons? How is south quad?

Bummpp please

I'm an incoming freshman myself but from what I've heard the honors housing is a better spot for freshman who prefer to not spend their weekends getting plastered, (at least not as heavily as the other dorms). Also as it is the honors dorm you'll obviously find people more studious and quiet due to the honors courses. Its in the south quad too which means you won't wind up on north campus you're first year and won't have to deal as much with the bus schedule as the other freshman, and from what I've heard you're also closer to some better places to eat. I haven't heard much on the drawbacks, just obviously if you want to join in on a bigger party scene go to a different dorm.

In my experience this is not true. Then again, it's all circumstantial. Just keep in mind that honors is definitely not full of nerds who like to study in their rooms all day. There are plenty of people there who will get plastered extremely often. If that's the main thing, I think getting into substance-free would be better.

I agree with everything else. South Quad is great in many many ways.

I live in South Quad (not in honors housing) and i'll be the first to say that 3/4 floors, where most the honors kids live probably have the most social, not necessarily partying people in my entire dorm.

You might not get South Quad either, honors has a section in Couzens now also...

Like I said, im an incoming freshman and thats only what I've heard so far. I don't expect any dorm at U-M to be alchohol or substance free, I just heard from a few people that the honors wasn't as heavy on it with the definition of heavy being very flexible.

I really can't decide about honors housing. I think it would be cool to get to know (especially) high achieving kids at U of M , but I'm a really social person and I like to have fun too.

If you have the option, I'd sign up just to lock in a spot on Central Campus. Though I went to UM along time ago, I appreciated being in East Quad with the dopers in the Residential College, compared to the commute in from North Campus.

I love living in south quad. There are party people, but it's nice to know that everyone you're living with is serious about their school work- especially near midterms/finals the dorm are more quiet. I have a friend who lives in west quad and she says my hall is much more social than hers. There's always some one around to ask for hw help, but there are a lot of people who like to party. Coming in, I didn't want to live in a hardcore party dorm and then there's people on the other side who wanted that and I think we all ended up loving south quad.

also the 9th floor has a computer lab with couches, desks, chairs so that's amazing for studying/finishing up essays/reports. It's open all day and there's people to help with computer problems and an academic advisor is there some days. Also the dining hall in south quad is huge, has great hours, and is open on weekends (a lot aren't).

south quad is by far one of the best locations on campus (unless you're engineer or musical theater) because it's so close to your classes! If you're doing honors (and are okay with not living in a really crazy party hall) then I strongly recommend south quad. Plus the honors RAs are great and it's nice living with people who are in some of your classes- make it so much easier to meet people in the beginning! If you have any specific q's feel free to ask me?
