How important is it to live in the Schreyer Honors housing as a freshman? My daughter wants to live in the North Hall suites but she's concerned that she'll be the only freshman Schreyer Scholar that won't be living in Atherton or Simmons, especially for the first week for Sho Time.

Its not critical. There are several scholars who live others places for SHO Time, they just make the trek down to the SHC for the activities (pretty full days).

Thanks cwryan1. She’s worried about feeling “out of the loop” if she doesn’t live there. Do you think it’s beneficial to live in the honors housing with the rest of the schreyer students for the first year?

My son wanted to be in either the honors housing or (if he didn’t get in) the engineering special learning group. For him, the main attraction of the honors dorm is the more central location and the availability of music practice rooms! He figured roommates in other dorms wouldn’t be real happy with his trumpet playing!

What’s her major?

Hmm, I don’t think it matters but it really depends on your D. If she is a little intimidated by the big college atmosphere at PSU then I would stick to the SHC house for at least her freshmen year. If she is ready to take the large size of Penn State then I think she would be fine in an SLO in north. But getting into an SLO is not guaranteed. If she is doesn’t get an SLO contract in north she could be placed in general East.

Her major is Food Science in the College of Agriculture. She wants to be in the SLO Earth House which is close to the Agricultural College buildings.

cwryan1~
She isn’t at all intimidated by the size. Her sister already attends. On her housing contract she put the SLO Earth House as her first choice. Should she also include honors housing as a backup just in case because she certainly doesn’t want to end up in east?

Yeah I would do that. She should get into EARTH House (I live there right now), as it is on of the less popular SLOs in North.

Thanks cwryan1! I hope you’re right. She really wants to be in Earth House. She accepted her offer to Penn State and sent in her housing contract on Nov. 4th. So hopefully she has a good chance.

What are the realistic chances of receiving honors housing if you don’t make it into shreyer’s?
Does it help to send in your request early? When do students find out about housing?

Similar question - I’m a Schreyer scholar; can I request a non-scholar to room with me in honors housing?

Yes you can request a non-scholar to live with you.

Non-scholars can request to live in honors housing. It is not guaranteed however. About 50% of the honors dorms are non-scholars. Having your housing contract in early helps increase your chances.
