The mom of a junior friend just starting the college process told me she was told that if you are in the honors program at UA that you get in-state tuition even if you are from OOS. I told her that I have never heard anyone mention that but I would throw it out to the CC board and see if anyone else has heard that. She did say the person who told her had a child that applied to UA last year but eventually went to Auburn so perhaps Auburn offers that and she is confused. Has anyone else heard of this?

Neither Auburn or Alabama are allowed to offer that. The right to get in-state tuition in Alabama is legislated by the gov’t.

Both Auburn and Alabama “get around” that by offering scholarships to OOS students will certain stats. It has nothing to do with joining Honors colleges.

However, what may have confused your friend is that many kids who have the stats to qualify for the honors college ALSO have the stats for a merit scholarship that either pays for ALL tuition or 2/3 tuition (which then equals “about” in-state tuition).

For instance see below to see what’s offered to OOS students with high stats that pays for their tuition or brings down their tuition significantly…

Students who have a 30-31 ACT or 1330-1390 SAT (critical reading and mathematics scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive two-thirds the cost of tuition for four years.

Students who have a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT (critical reading and mathematics scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive out-of-state tuition for four years.

Both Bama and Auburn offer pretty much the same scholarships.
