Honors Math

Vanderbilt is in the south, so it must suck. Get away, and stay away.

Stucci's is not very expensive.

And yes, plenty of time for doing stupid stuff on the weekends.

The South isn't that bad...

And oh...that's what "hooking up" means...it was explained to me today. Sorry, us Alabamians don't know that word...or assume it's something and end up needing other people to explain that it's not...

just..wow...this is easily one of my favorite threads ever...you math kids are hilarious! lol

Christine, don't feel bad about the terminology confusion, I think the definition of "hooking up" is quite nebulous...

KB

From what I've heard, the south is that bad. My friend went down there, said he saw a bunch of hicks sittin out on their front porch, and was just speechless because it was all true. This is also the same kid who advised a teacher to beat his son because he started to speak with a southern accent because you don't want your kids picking up bad habits.

Hooking up is only nebulous as far how far you think it means you went, which varies by personal moralities and standards.

Oh many...explaining american slang terms to foreign students...funfunfun. But then again, I know lots of slang terms that even americans don't know... Initially nobody got why Abraham Lincoln was such an amazing trump card in apples to apples.

I was born and raised in the South. Therefore, it can't be that bad.
I guess it also depends what part of the South you live in...
10 minutes outside the city limits, there's a gigantic billboard with clouds and an angel and then A devil's face and fire...by gigantic, I mean the size of 6-8 regular billboards...saying, "Are you going to Heaven or HELL?"
But the entire South isn't like that.

So, since this is my new addiction, what does "we hooked up" on facebook mean?

As far as I'm concerned...it is =P.

I don't know if CC is the place to be discussing the technicalities of these things. I guess the most innocent definition is extending making out with no commitment to a relationship. It's definitely not the kind of thing anybody seriously advertises on facebook.

to me, its un-planned intimate contact that can range from making out to sexual intercourse. To me, the emphasis is on the randomness of it (e.g in my book, one cannot "hook-up" with his/her boy/girlfriend).

KB

Hmm...I think I will just not use the phrase.

Oh, and the South isn't that bad.

hehe.....well..that's just my definition...some (even many) might disagree...

Okay. I don't know where else to post this. So hello to this thread again.

SPIVAK'S CALCULUS ARRIVED AT MY HOUSE TODAY!!!

Congrats, but you're late. =p I've had Spivak for two years now. Given, it is the original edition from 1960 that kinda smells odd, but its still cool.

On a slightly different topic:
What do you think would be a better math class for me to take, Applied Honors Calc II MATH 156 OR Honors Calc III MATH 285?
I'm a biology major and thinking about getting a second major in engineering. Also, I took BC Calc my junior year and got a 5, but forget most of the details.

Calc III, hands-down. You'll most likely learn nothing new of value in Honors Applied Calc II, and you should take Calc III eventually, anyways.

I wouldn't say calc III hands down. Even kids who got a 5 on Calc BC the year before often struggle with 156 and from looking at the homework, there are some really interesting topics in that class not covered in AP Calculus BC, so it wouldn't be a total waste of your time. Take both if possible.

Jeez...... math majors. They're so wierd. :)

Speaking of honors math, how did everyone perform on the putnam this year. What were some high scores among frosh/sophomores/etc....?

And how di you prepare for Putnam? I was lucky and got a 9 on the AIME this year, but I still haven't solved a singe Putnam problem.

well, I guess 185 is full now. So, is 156 a lot of proofs and theories? I hope not.

i got a 5 on bc senior year, but I'm wondering what math class I should take. I was thinking math 285 or 295 but im also taking orgo and great books and french 23x so idk if that's too tough a schedule. I'm a bio/math double major I think at this point.

295! everyone take it.

FordGT, if i remember your stats correctly, you sounded pretty qualified for 295. If you want to be serious about math, there's no other choice.

what's 295? Is it much harder than 285 or 156?
