Honors or AP Chem?

Hello everyone, as you can see I’m new to CC . This week we were given our forms to fill out or our classes next year and I have no idea what to do for my science option. I’m hoping to major in Chemistry and Medicine and so I would like to take AP Chem. At my school we are allowed to jump straight into AP Chem without any prior experience, however I’m not sure if I should since I dont want drown with a lot of homework from my other classes. Any advice, comments, and thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would take AP Chem if you’re planning on majoring in chemistry. Be ready to attend tutoring, take notes and work hard!

It’s not impossible to take AP Chem as a first Chem course, but be prepared for a lot of work. People who have taken an intro chem course often complain about the workload, but they at least have some previous knowledge of the topics. Undoubtedly, you will need to spend even more time just to play catch up.

Thanks for the advice , I’ll will review this summer and maybe take an intro course online? I got a B- in H Biology last and same goes to this semester so I don’t know if that might change anything?

If you’ve been getting B-s in bio, I would consider easing into chem with honors before AP. AP Chem is not one of the easier APs.

Okay Thanks, I’ll talk to my GC about doubling on science in junior AP Physics and AP Chem, if it I’m not allowed then Idk what I will do.

I would highly suggest that you take Chemistry Honors, before AP Chem. Not only will you have the basic, to build off of if you take Chemistry Honors then AP Chem, but you will have deeper insight and knowledge on chem, which ideal if you are going to be a Chem and/or Med major. Many of my peers at my charter school took Chemistry Honors previous to AP Chem and they can’t explain how much it helped them out

Thanks for the advice!

If I were you, I would take Honors Chem first. I’m in it right now, and it’s not the easiest class, and it’s definitely harder than Honors Bio. Also, I’ve heard from people who took AP Chem, and they found it rather difficult.

But if you think you can do it, look into AP Chem. It’s not impossible, and you can do it.

Hope this helps

Update: Honors Chem is full so I cant join that class for next year… Not sure what to do, Should I Drop to regular or what else should I do?

If you really can’t take Honors Chem next year, you could jump straight to AP. Just understand that it isn’t the easiest class. If you do end up doing this, you may want to start learning over the summer. It’ll make it easier for you next year.
