Hang in there, Knightforum! Once you find your niche, UCF really doesn’t feel that big at all. At least that’s what my S tells me. He’s going into his 3rd year with the honors college, and that’s one thing … hang out at the Burnett Honors college when you have some free time. It’s great to have your own “place,” and a real luxery (sp?). Most campuses don’t have a building dedicated solely to honors. And don’t forget about the honors congress … that’s the fun part of the organization. Seriously, whatever your interested is on campus in some club or group. Plug in! Finding that smaller group will help you feel not so much like one tiiiiny fish in a very big ocean.

Long days, especially since graduation was Wednesday night.

Son stayed with his big brother in Tower 3. We stayed with relatives in the area. It will cease to be overwhelming very soon, I promise.

Next year big brother is moving to Tower 1, and freshman son will be in Tower 3. He’s very excited. He has a schedule, although he wants to make some changes.

As parents, we skipped a lot of the sessions. We did it two years ago, and have a son there now, and feel pretty comfortable about knowing how it all works at this point.

We decided on the 100 Block meal plan for son 3, and he’ll use that to buy some meals for big bro, who cooks in the dorms. Breakfasts and lunches and some dinners he’ll do in the dorm and/or brown bag/fastfood it.

We are all exhausted and glad we’re done, and looking forward to a relaxing summer and a great year.

Orientation was great!! I know for a fact now that I made the right choice of UCF Honors over UF in general. I am a little intimidated tho since I’ll be taking 16 credit hours my first semester and 14 in spring. I also felt a little out of place because while I do feel I’m a good student, almost everyone else who is in Honors has like a thousand AP credits with them or was in IB or dual enrollment. I only come with 2 AP classes under my belt ): only one of which I’m confident that I passed. Was anyone else or their S or D that intimidated as well or was it just me?

I felt the exact same way marlins97. I have no AP or dual enrollment credits right now. I am waiting on 3 AP scores to come in July… but I am not that confident that I passed them. During advising I was hearing how almost everyone had a majority of their Gen. Eds. covered, so I felt a little behind.
I am not looking forward to the symposium class and lab. I wanted to just go to UCF, go to my classes, and do my work. I didn’t really want to “get involved.” I am glad that it is only a semester long though.

My S did not that feel that way at all. He came out of orientation a more confident individual and very excited about starting college. He has already met two new people from orientation and one of them was having a challenge finding the courses. So my S who was prepared helped the guy and they ended up having two classes together. For the people who are heading to orientation my advise is be prepared with your class listing. The counselors were very confusing and not consistent with their advise.

As a parent I see how you have to get prepared to let go and changed from a manager to an advisor in your child’s life.

I agree with jswdlw.
Before you go to orientation you should know myUCF forwards and backwards. When it is time to register there is no time to learn how to register, you need to know how to do it. It would be best if you come to the orientation with your class schedule already made and the class numbers written down so that there is no struggle when registering. I did this and I got into every class that I wanted. Other people there stuggled and were not able to get the classes that they needed.

I’m with you guys with the AP credit. I have 3 credits from the AP eng language exam i passed last year with a 3, and dont think i passed any of the 3 exams i took this year. im actually more excited then before about starting school though, it sucks though how we have to wait 2 months until it starts. They pump you up, and then make you wait lol.

i got forced into a college algebra class for the fall semester, since the precal classes were all full. i hope they open new sections soon, as my college algebra class also has 300 kids in it, since the ones with 20 kids were at times i couldn’t take it. either way, for now i set my spring schedule with precal, something other kids can’t do because they aren’t honors. the thing that is tough with schedule though is that you can’t change your symposium once you enrolled. your stuck with the time you picked

MysteryTime - Pre-Calc should open up during other fall orientations… you can switch then. You don’t have to take College Algebra though, as long as you tested out of it. If you don’t need it, then don’t take it.

I start in 3 weeks, for the summer B term. I am glad that I don’t have to wait until fall but there are so many things to do in the next 3 weeks, it is stressful.

Does anyone remember what the O-Teamers or anyone said about tests? Are tests taken during class time or do you always go to the testing center for tests, no matter the class? I’m thinking of redoing my schedule…I have one class monday, and no class friday, wiht my Tuesday and Wednsday pretty full. I’m not sure whether it’s better to have most of my classes put into just a couple days, with a few easy days during the week, or if I should spread them out. The thing with Tuesday though is that I have both my symposium lab and lecture back to back, with about an hour and a half between them after econ. Any opinions on what I should do with my schedule would be great

Tests usually depend on the professor… I am not sure what the O-Teamers said though.

I have the lecture and the lab on Tuesday just like you. Originally I had no classes on Thursday but I had to make a change, so I have one in the morning. I am still working on my fall schedule since classes do open up everyday from others dropping. I am constrantly on myUCF picking up the classes that I want because they were recently dropped. I am still waiting on AP scores, so there may be another drastic change in my schedule soon. You have until the end of August to make the perfect schedule, and classes will continue to open up, especially during the fall orientation sessions.

Also, it wouldn’t hurt to email your advisor from orientation every once in a while to make sure your schedule is okay. They will also answer any questions you may have.
