Honors Program and Residential College

Hi.

I am an admitted 2015 LSA student, and I got an e-mail that suggested me to join Residential College, which I am fasinated.

I am also considering to participate in Honors Program, and learned that RC and Honors can be done jointly.

Regarding this, I have several questions.

I was not actually invited to join the Honors Program, mainly I believe because of my poor ACT score (28). Is there good chance for people like me to get into Honors Program? (Provided that the Honors Essay is decent)

Is it possbile to participate in Honors Program after spending 2 years in the RC or LSA? For example, if I want to join Honors Program in the beginning of my junior year, is it possbile? If so, do I have to take that Great Books or Classical Civilization class?

Is it possbile to take honors courses without being in Honors Program?

How helpful are RC and Honors Program if I were to apply to medical school?

House are the dormitories? (I know dormitory conditions must not be the determining factor, but it will be the place that I will have to spend 4 years of my life, and I don't want to do so in a place like dungeon.) How East Quad and South Quad differ from North Quad? (I heard that North Quad is quite horrible.) Do they have personal batherooms?

Is it possible to get Honors Degree without participating in Honors Program? More specifically, for example, if I fulfill all the requirement for Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics with honors courses, will I get Honors Degree in Mathematics?

How is like the first year writing seminar in RC? Is it more discussion based or lecture based? The class size? The intensity? (I am not quite good at English.)

I know I ask to much, but I count on you guys! Thanks!

Plus, CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THOSE WHO ARE ADMITTED TO UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN! GO BLUE!

Honors program is just Honors program, you don’t have to be in that program to be successful.

If you apply, you’ll probably get in. You don’t have to be invited.

After two years, to continue in honors you have to write a thesis. You can do kind of do honors starting junior year if you choose to write a thesis.

No.

Probably not too helpful. RC would show a pretty diverse background, but honors wouldn’t really matter.

There’s one reason I did honors–the housing. South quad is sweet. The rooms are huge and the dining hall isn’t too bad. If you did the RC, you’d live in East Quad which, at orientation, you find is terrible. The food sucks, the rooms are tiny; East Quad just sucks haha. I mean, some wold argue it’s awesome but most would disagree. North campus is what you’re thinking of; North quad is brand new and really nice.

You get an honors degree by writing a thesis, you don’t need to do the honors program. (I think.)

No idea. It’s small & pretty intense, I know that.

Havveeee fun!

Not sure how hard it is to get into honors, but you can definitely do both RC and honors.

No, you start honors as a freshman.

No.

Not sure either would make that much difference in a med school app. Probably your grades and mcat exams scores will be more important.

The RC only requires you to live in EQ for 2 years and as far as dorms go, it’s fine. The location is great and your RC classes will be in the same building you live in…which is very nice in the winter or if you like to roll out of bed and go down some steps to your classroom. EQ is much worse during orientation than it is during the school year, including the food.

You definitely do not need to be in the honors program to graduate with honors, but a thesis is required to do so.

My D loved her 1st year seminar in the RC. The class was small, taught by an amazing professor and seminar style. I remember that she did write some papers for the class, but because she chose a subject she was intensely interested in, she never complained. Even if your English skills are not strong, the point of the freshman seminars is to improve your paper writing and research skills while learning a subject you enjoy.

On Competition:

From the LSA Honors website, Q&A section for prospective students:

How many applications do you receive?

Last year, approximately 1500 students applied to Honors. We expect about the same number of applications this year.

__

What is the size of the incoming class?

500 students is our target for the incoming class.

My S just got accepted into the Honors Program. Can anyone provide more details about South Quad Honors Housing? Thanks!
