Just curious to see who else is applying to or already has applied to the Honors Program at UW. I sent my actual UW application in by the priority deadline of December 1st, but I thought I'd leave the Honor application 'till the very last minute like the procrastinator I am, hehe.

For those who are applying / have applied, which essay prompt did you choose to reply to? I chose the second one, about leaving 3 books on the footstep of a public figure. My public figure is President Bush, and the books I chose are Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun/i and Arthur Miller's *The Crucible -- I'm comparing the literal witch-hunt of the Salem, MA to the 'witch-hunt' of terrorists post-9/11, and pretty much saying that our 'witch-hunt' is almost as absurd as that of the Salem Witch Trials. I have yet to come to a final decision about my 3rd book though, I debating between a couple of novels.

It is interesting; I suspect more applicants could do a better job with the honors essay prompts than the regular admission essay prompts. My d wanted to respond to those rather than the regular essays even though she wasn't applying to honors.

It's always dangerous to write about the president and politics...even though WA is pretty liberal doesn't mean that someone conservative doesn't work there as an admission officer

Hey, I sent in my Honors Program application yesterday (I did the same thing you did Titania, got my application in on Dec.1 but waited until the last minute to send in my honors application!) and I chose prompt #1; the one about privileges and responsibility. Anyways, I wrote about something kind of personal, but I'm a little concerned because the thing I wrote about in this essay is a little similar to what I wrote about in my reg. admission essay. Oh well, there's not much I can do now.

So does anybody know anything about how being in Honors affects the classes that you'll be in? Like, do you take normal classes (those huge ones) as well as honors classes? I thought that being in honors meant that all of your classes were smaller, but now i'm not sure if this is the case. I got into a bunch of smaller private schools (Boston College being my #1), but I was considering choosing UW if I got into the Honors Program as well as the freshman business program. Does anybody know anything about this freshman business program???

I agree with seven, best to stay away from politics and controversial subjects like abortion and gay marriage etc. But I would think your essay is very strong by the way you were able to parallel those books to the current world situation. I'm conservative though :P

As far as I know, Honors get special access to the Honors lounge (whatever that is), and access to areas that other people can't (maybe a diff library)... also I think your classes are smaller, not sure if they are all or just some.

I hated the Honor's essay...would be extremely surprised if I got in. I wrote on a book and had to rewrite a seperate essay...ugh. sent mine in time for teh priority deadline.

Yes, I agree with you Dopke and seven that writing about politics is always pretty risky, and I kept that in mind as I put together my own essay. While I feel that I did clearly and confidently state my opinions by the books I chose to use, I read and reread it multiple times to make sure that I did not come off as biased or like some flaming liberal who was ready pack her bags and move to Canada the minute she heard that Bush had been re-elected. Actually, while I do consider myself quite liberal, I do have a few somewhat conservative views on certain issues. Hopefully I was careful enough in my paper that if there does happen to be a conservative on the admissions committee, they won't hate me just for my anti-Bush sentiments.

rovee -- haha, good to know I'm not the only one leaving everything to the absolute last minute. And as to your question about whether being in the honors program means that all of you classes are different than the regular freshman or just a few: I was actually wondering about that too. My first impression was that it meant Honors Program students didn't have any classes with the regular freshman, but I wasn't sure, so I checked the 'about' page on the Honors Program website, and here's what it says:

The Honors core curriculum is interdisciplinary in design and incorporates an international perspective. Members of the Full College Honors Program normally enroll in **one honors course each quarter/b and complete their degrees at the same pace as other undergraduates

I hope that answers your question. I was kind of hoping that all the classes would be smaller, but I guess not. shrug

Oooh, 'special access' to the Honors Lounge? haha, sounds so exclusive XD

But I'm not getting my hopes up or anything, 'cause I've heard that the Honors Program is hella hard to get into. Like my fab English teacher says, being a pessimist is always best, since if you always expect the worse, you'll never be disappointed! lol

i have two friends who heard last week that they got rejected from the honors program. i think that they got their letters on thursday, february 3.

yea im wondering when we get our decisions for the honors program too....do you know what AI makes you pretty much an automatic qualifier as long as you have decent/good essays?

uhm. .jeeze, i don't know their exact sat/act scores, but...

they are both valedictorians (there are 5 of us altogether), both really involved in school (he's the cross country capt., math club president, and some other stuff and she is a cheer captain, french club pres, orchestra pres, and some other stuff), have great relationships w/ teachers so awesome recommendations, and wow.. i don't know what else to say, other than the fact that they both have 4.0. I know that one of them wrote about the 3 places (i think), but i'm not sure about the guy. So yeah, I'm sorry if that wasn't much of a help, but good luck everyone!

neelash.. i dont think they have an automatic anything for the honors program.. its super selective so i think that they have to do a thorough evaluation for everyone who applied.

that sucks ecnerwalc3321, i'm sorry, but don't feel too bad because i heard that there were over 200 applicants. i'm not sure how many people applied but i know that this year was super competitive. when do you send in your application? and hey, thanks for the encouragement! also, is anybody like seriously considering doing the honors program if they get admitted?
