My D was admitted to the Honors Program at Rutgers for both SAS and RBS. She received a $3500 Scarlet Scholarship so that does help a little with the finances. Does anyone know what benefits are offered to students enrolled in the Honors Program? I know there are honors dorms. Are these guaranteed for just freshman year or other years too? Are there smaller honors classes? Any special programming for the Honors Program? Just wondering if anyone had any more information. Thanks!
Students in the RBS honors program actually don’t have specific honors housing. SAS has one specific honors dorm on each campus. These honors programs are independant of the Honors College, which has specific housing on College Avenue.
Jmom2016; when and how did you find out about Scarlet Scholarship?
Thanks @mohchan360. Do only freshman live in the honors housing for SAS or is it upperclassmen too? Good to know that there is honors housing on each campus.
@Krj957 she heard on 2/1.
Honors Program housing is for both first-year and continuing students.
@jmom2016 My daughter was accepted as well with the same scholarship. Did you attend Scholars Day (one of the Honors Program info sessions)? It was excellent and convinced my daughter that Rutgers is a frontrunner. She was accepted into UDel Honors program as well. I saw that your D applied there as well. Has she been to Udel? We haven’t visited yet and the Taste of Udel (honors info session) is full but I wanted to find out the perks of Udel Honors program?
Hi @momoffive - my daughter is going to the Taste of UD in April. My niece loved UDel and one of my son’s close friends went there and loved it too. I have heard many positive reviews. Are you going to the UD info session?
When we tried to sign up for the Scholars Day at Rutgers it was already full. We requested to be added on if possible to the date at the end of March. What put Rutgers as a frontrunner?
@jmom2016 It looks like we have a lot in common!!! We are going on a regular campus tour/info session at Udel on 4/14. I asked if we could stop by Taste of UD because I really wanted to hear about the honors program and the man said no. I was a little turned off about the whole thing. The man on the phone said we would have to pay for parking as well. Rutgers honors program info session was incredible. First of all, my daughter was not on board with me about going to Scholars Day. As we were leaving the house in the morning, my daughter says to me “I’m not going to Rutgers, I’m just going to this program to make you happy.” When we arrived, at the SAS presentation, we met with the deans, professors, and current students and we were able to talk to them one-on-one over lunch. You could feel the love and passion that all of these people had for this program. The students were so impressive doing so many things like internships, research projects, going on trips to Mexico, Ireland, Spain, Poland through the “global experiences.” They have “tea with the dean” every week so the students develop close relationships with the faculty. The students during the student panel answered many questions and you could tell they were very happy there. They admitted they were accepted to ivy league schools and ended up at Rutgers because of financial reasons but when they talk to their friends at these prestigious schools, they realize they are so much happier at Rutgers and they do not regret their decision at all!!! I like the fact that they have honors housing as well. At McCormick (honors housing on Busch), the dean is in a near by building and drops in on Sunday mornings with bagels to chat with the students in a casual setting. On the way home, my daughter asked if we could walk around College ave because she could definitely see herself going there:)
@momoffive great information thank you! We aren’t going to Del until April 29. If you’re still undecided then shoot me a note and I’ll fill you in. I hope we are able to attend Scholars Day at Rutgers. We have not heard back from them yet. Maybe they will add another day. I agree that it is unfortunate that the schools don’t have enough programs to accommodate all the students who are interested in attending. I think they should have accommodated you for Taste of UD.
@momoffive just a thought… maybe have your daughter contact UD about the Taste of UD program. If she shows that she is interested in the school maybe the will be more accommodating.
@jmom2016 Thanks, my daughter did contact the honors department and they gave her the admissions extension who said she would not be allowed to attend due to being at maximum capacity. I hope Rutgers can accommodate you. The email and number that I have for the Rutgers honors program are honors@sas.rutgers.edu, 848-932-7964.
@momoffive Delaware opened some more dates for Taste of UD. The opened April 4 and April 8.
@jmom2016, Congrats to your daughter! May I ask if the cost of UDel and Rutgers with her scholarship are comparable? We are in NJ, visiting Rutgers next month and wondering if we should plan to visit UDel but not if cost prohibitive. Thanks!
@tpcrd66, UDel is more than Rutgers for us, but the scholarship my daughter received was enough to keep UD in the running. I think UDel will be about 4k or 5k more.
@jmom2016 Thanks for the update!! We are going in April now. @tpcrd66 Udel is (with a scholarship) about $36K for us, we are in NJ. Rutgers is about $25k (with a small scholarship). There is an $11k difference between the two schools. We are still planning to visit UDel but right now (unless UDel knocks our socks off) we are almost positive that my daughter will attend Rutgers in the fall.
