Honors Program at UCI

Is the UCI Honors Program comparable to UCLA, UCSD, USC, or UC Berkley?

Just wondering :)

Also, for anyone who is currently enrolled in the honors program: How do you feel about the program?

It’s better than going to those schools; you’re going to get basically the same undergraduate education at UCI, but you’ll have priority enrollment (which is huge in your first and second year of college), guaranteed four year housing and several other benefits.

also, i’d take issue with you putting USC and UCSD in the same league as berkeley and ucla, but that’s just me.

hmm that sounds pretty nice… I just hate how so many people judge UCI as the reject school for the top UC schools.

Priority enrollment is definitely a big plus. Also, if you want other opinions, just search other threads. You’ll see pros and cons and differing sides.
I think it also depends on your major. If your major isn’t great at UCI, but amazing at another school, then you might be better off elsewhere. However, if the schools equal for the most part on majors, I think CHP is definitely a big big plus.
I always felt like at a more prestigious school I would have been lost in the crowd, but at UCI I’m more at the top. I had the choice between UCI (CHP + Regents) and 2/4 of those schools on your list… I chose UCI. I used to wonder if it was the right choice, but now I feel like it was. I eventually dropped out of CHP though, but I think if I stuck around with it, I’d feel even more at the top.

take it from someone who was in your position a few years ago: high school students have no idea what they want when it comes to college. I remember that my only concern was getting into a college that sounded impressive to my peers and being “prestigious.”

Today, these aren’t the things I think about at all. I’m worried about doing well in classes, having fun with my friends, making sure i’m taking the right courses so I graduate in four years, making money, doing research/internships, being in a relationship, etc.

I guess what i’m trying to say is, stop thinking about college in terms of how impressive it is and start thinking about what it will actually be like when you’re living on campus. That’s what counts.

well you guys are all making uci seem more and more attractive. I definitely need to stop caring what others think and follow my heart. I probably will visit UCI’s campus and chp in the near future so that I can get a better understanding of what they are like.

By the way, what did you guys think of housing in UCI? Is it nice?

I don’t go to UCI, but I’m hoping for Fall 2011! I have visited the school a few times, and the housing is pretty nice. I would be a transfer, so honestly I did not pay much attention to the dorms, but they seemed relatively okay! Give them a call, more than likely they’ll pick up. ask questions, visit the school, look UCI up on FB and take a look at the pictures. Take a look at the school’s website, I’m sure they also have housing pictures there (as well as general ones)

I’m a recent alumni of UCI and I’m heading to an Ivy for graduate school. I used to be in the honors program and I do think that there is something to be said about being wanted and special somewhere rather than being any other undergrad. If you’re worried about prestige, it’s really your last degree that counts anyway.

I used to feel insecure about going to UCI but looking back it was a great decision. I had wonderful professors whose doors were always open, and I think that more than anything helped me get into a graduate program. I got to know the professors who taught my seminars well and was once invited to a professor’s house for dinner with my classmates.

As for UCI’s housing, it’s pretty clean and there’s lots of options. I think they opened the new housing they were building as well.

The dorms are alright, not as bad as other UCs since the max is triple-occupancy.
The 2nd year housing can be really nice if you get Vista Del Campo. I think it’s a really good value for a single room, but it’s up to you if you want to spend the money.
There’s also Camino Del Sol, which is basically for everyone, it’s really nice, but way expensive. These campus apartments are really really nice, especially for college housing. (amenities: gym, pool, billiards, etc.) plus you don’t have to deal with paying utility bills!

Does UCI give any money to CHP or Regents this year?

Is it still possible to be admitted into the Honors Program if I haven’t received a decision yet?
