I got a letter from UCSD Eleanor Roosevelt College that I was accepted into their Honors program. Looking through the information they sent me, it looks as if the Honors program simply consists of taking a couple of additional classes.

I heard from another source that students in the honors program have additional benefits (such as choosing classes before everyone else) as well. Could someone elaborate on this?

You can get into the honors program once you attain a GPA of 3.8. They will send you a letter. From then on you must attain a 3.5. Basically it's hard to get in, but it's easier to stay in once you are in.
If you have 700 or above on each section of the SAT you can also be in the honors program.

Hm, I've had >3.8 for a while now and I'm not in the honors program...

Personally though, I don't see any real benefit to being in the honors program, but that's just me. The opportunities it presents seem to be handed to you on a silver platter, versus you going out there and looking for them. It doesn't seem to exclude you from anything other than an honors seminar...at least for Muir college.

Different colleges have different honors programs. There is no 'UCSD' honors. In Warren, you need 3.7 GPA to be in the honors program. If you're a freshman, you will be in automatically for a year if you have 700+s on your SATs.

do they calculate your gpa by quarter and re-evaluate your honors status every quarter? like if i keep a 3.5 or higher the first few quarters but then mess up one quarter, am i automatically out, even if i get a 3.5 the quarter after that?

If your cumulative GPA drops below the threshold, you will be booted from the honors program. It's totally fine if your GPA for the quarter falls below the threshold though. If you're a freshman, you get to stay in the program for a year before they kick you out.

*Every college has a different honors program, so what I said may not be applicable to you.
