Honors program at UM LSA

Hi Folks,

Daughter is a strong student - National Merit finalist, NHS, very strong grade point and so on... She received a letter offering her acceptance to the Honors program at U of M LSA. Problem is, she's having a great deal of difficulty deciding whether to go with the Honors program or the regular program...

Any key insights or observations which might help in decision making process would be truly appreciated.

Sincerely, drd

Congratulations on the invitation!

There are many threads on the topic. Just scroll through succeeding pages and you'll get a good sense of the pros and cons.

Great Books - best reason to do the honors program - my son did his first year (he was a BBA early admit so could only it freshman year) but it was well worth it just to take that class, in his opinion.

the honors program is great in several ways

I'm a freshman and I love living in honors housing- I had people to study with who were in my classes and it was easier to meet people because we had something in common. i would say the other students is the number one reason to do it.

The classes- two types of honors classes that I like are classes meant for all honors kids our honors discussion sections. If you're in an all honors class like great books you're with all honors students in lecture and discussion which is awesome. In a honors section of a regular class (let's say Polisci) you have a regular lecture and an honors discussion section. My gsi said that he saw a big difference between the atmosphere in an honors section verses non-honors. I don't think the honors classes are harder- they've actually been easier for me bc they've been more interesting.

honors events and advising- the lunches, guest speakers and little events are fun- lots of people don't go but it's free food and normally great speakers. Also, advising is great bc you don't have to wait as long as everyone to get an appointment.

A lot of people start out in honors their first year and don't continue but it's not cause they don't like it-but more that they are switching to business or don't want to have to take the required number of honors courses anymore. The honors program was why I chose UMich and i would recommend at least trying it.
