Honors Program Chances

I am really interested in the Honors Program at NEU, but I am not sure what kind of credentials I need. Advice?:

SAT: CR: 630 Writing: 720 Math: 750
SAT II: Math II: 720 US History: 670 Spanish: 590 (ugh)

Essays: Excellent
Extra Curriculars: Many, including a lot of community work

GPA: Approximately a 3.6 (ours is out of 9.0 so I am scaling it, and its also weighted)

APs: 3

Many academic distinctions/Awards

Bilingual (Fluent [reading/writing/speaking] in Russian)

And I recently wrote a letter to update the office of admissions on recent developments, and included that I wanted to be seriously considered for the program.

I have seen a lot of people speak about their children entering the honors program at NEU, could you give me an idea of their credentials? Thank you!

i recently talked to someone in honors and they said 3.8 gpa weighted with a 1340 is usually the requirement for honors.

the gpa suckss.

my gpa sucks? that's not very nice....

and i have a 1380, so i guess that helps

I don't get it, what does 3.6 out of 9.0 mean?

haha no i mean the gpa sucks that you need to have... mines too low and i wanted to be in the honors program =/

I was also wondering what 3.6 out of 9.0 means.

OH!! haha im sorry i didnt make it clear. our gpa is out of 9 points (weird I know) so on a nine point scale, i tried to scale it to a four point scale, but its hard because the reason its out of nine points is because its REALLLLLLLLLLLY weighted. the only way you could have a perfect gpa is if you were taking ALL APs/Honors and getting straight a's (no a-'s either) basically only two people in my high schools history have every graduated with a perfect gpa, and they were slightly insane (and i mean that in the most loving way haha)

but is it for sure? because a 3.8 gpa is pretty high. i know at least at umass for the honors program you need at least a 3.5 and a 1300 cumulative......but then again, if you live in MA, its an easy in.

I dont fully understand either. They say they invite the top 10% into the honors college, so during the admissions process are they inviting 10% of admitted students, or are they shooting for 10% of enrolled freshmen? What if they get a very low yield from the honors college invitees? I thought my kid would be invited but was not. He asked admissions to take another look, which they will. Even if he ends up not getting into the honors college that would mean the entering class is pretty strong.

well NJres, you have to consider, colleges always accept a much larger pool than will actually enroll. No offense to NEU (i LOVE it and hope to go there obviously since i started this thread) but its not AS competitive as some really top tier schools (for which it is known to be a safety) therefore, they want to accept kids whom they really see as accepting the opportunity at NEU over a top school because it is more nurturing, and less about the name, somehow, that will show in their app. i mean, i sent them an extra letter asking them to seriously consider because neu is my first choice, and i think i can contribute immensely.

and about the 10% thing, i think its 10% of freshman they expect will enroll. they accept about 200 kids a year into the program, dont they?

The letter we got from the Honors Program Office said there are 280 in the honors program (that must be from last year's class)

ratedpg, did you or your child get in? what were your/their credentials? (if you dont mind sharing of course)

A 3.8 is definitely not a necessity. My friend had a 1360 SAT score and a 3.6 GPA (at a top public high school) and was accepted although she did not matriculate at NEU.

haha that makes my day qnyergrl cause that means i have a chance =)

Glad I could make your day lol...I like to prepare for the worst. That way whenever something good happens it's more than a pleasant surprise.

I had a 3.8 unweighted and a 1320 and i didn't get in? I applied for engineering but im changing it to history, any chance they might review it again with the change of major since engineering students are more qualified? And were my stats really not good enough to get in honors?

sometimes if you call the school they can either tell you why you werent admitted or relook at your stats and if they know you are seriously considering both the school and the honors program they will change their ruling... i called them a few days ago asking them questions like this thats why i know haha

troteck, did you do ea?

Yea I did. I got into the engineering school with like 11k a year I think. Would calling do anything for me getting into the honors program? Do you review applications?

i got into engineering honors and also the dean's scholarship with a 3.1 GPA and around 1500 SATs..... but northeastern was my ultimate early action safety..and it's no longer even my safety anymore, there's no way in hell i m going since i just got accepted by U MIch and University of Illinois at Urbana engineering

i dont think they have a "set minimum GPA" ..but then...they might have looked at my case differently, since I go to one of the top 8 most prestigious prep school in the nation, up there with choate, andover and such... ya..but just to show that they dont have a fixed minimum
