Honors Program Chances

troteck, was the review apps question for me? if so, im applying, not an admissions officer, so i dont know

Sorry, it wasn't for anyone in particular. It was just for anyone that knew anything about it, since someone mentioned somethign about calling above. Thing is, I've heard people say they got into honors with a lower sat and gpa than me so thats why I was wondering.

There is a general SAT cutoff but also certain majors have a higher cutoff than others.

gosh im just so impatient!! i really just hope i can get in. that would make my life.

i think i mentioned this before, but i wrote a letter updating neu about recent developments (new projects/volunteering/awards) and at the end i asked them to consider me for the honors program (i mean obviously its not like an automatic "lets think a little harder about this one" type of deal) but do you think they'll get around to reading it? i just sent it a couple weeks ago, before mid year reports, so in theory they should be checking my app one more time...

I thought the de facto honors SAT cutoff was a 1360 on the 1600 scale. I have a friend that had only a 1300 and did not make Honors despite good EC's, & a 4.0 GPA. In fact, she was so qualified she made the waitlist for Cornell.

NEU is also difficult to bargain with when you're discussing aid. I have another friend who is now matriculating at NYU who made the Honors program but received less merit aid than another friend and I did, with both of us not making Honors. I have a very hard time believing that our EFCs did not factor into the decision although they claim otherwise. My friend who made Honors has an EFC that is sky high while mines was significantly lower, but still probably wouldn't qualify me for aid from Northeastern. My other friend who got a lot of merit aid and didn't make Honors had a low EFC and received the largest merit package despite having the lowest average.

Hey well this might help you out a bit! I got accepted at the honors program at NEU for this year. My grades weren't outstanding, 3.6, but my test scores were pretty good ACT 33, SAT 1310. I didn't have a ton of EC's mostly church leadership stuff and i'm an eagle scout. So basically, i was quite surprised at getting accepted to the honors program especially directly into chem engineering!

I think we all agree that it is quite a mystery as to how NEU views stats relative to the honors program, as well as merit aid. They intentionally leave it very vague when they say "top 10% of the applicant pool".

gchester, where are you from? My D was accepted into honors in chem e as well. And congratulations.

Thanks PG. I'm from Ohio, akron area. Has your D decided on NEU and honors for sure? Personnally, i'm a little iffy on the honors program, it sounds absolutely awesome, but with co-op's and everything i don't want to get too weighed down with extra classes, and I didn't thoroughly look at the honors program when i was out there because i wasn't expecting to get into honors. What feel did you get when looking at the honors program?

99% sure on NEU Honors. Already put in deposit for WVF housing (the new dorm). I hope to get a better feel for the program tomorrow at the Admitted students welcome day. I think she will give it a try, however, at least for the first year. I don't really think there are extra classes per se, but as I said, we hope to get more info tomorrow. How about you, have you decided on NEU?

There really isn't an extra workload if you're in the Honors program. You basically just have to take one honors version of a course that will replace another. You don't to take any extra courses, rather you just will be taking one per semester in lieu of a non-honors one. My friend in Honors took honors psychology last term and is taking an honors sociology course this term. She is in pharmacy, so the psychology was a requirement and the sociology course (called "peoples and cultures") is an elective for her. The other requirement is to write an honors thesis down the road. I don't really know too much about that to be honest.

There is a guidebook for the Honors program available on NEUs website, but basically they require that you take 6 honors courses before Jr yr; one of these is an honors seminar which I guess would be an "extra" course as opposed to an honors section of a course you would be taking anyway. Then during Jr/Sr year you must complete an Honors project.

Excellent, thanks for the information. That really makes me feel a lot better about doing honors program. At this point i'm probably 60% NEU 40% Cincinnati because of their ACCEND program which allows you to come out with BS in Chem E and an MBA in 5 years. Pretty cool program. But generally I really like neu because of the location and their program.

I keep hearing that the top benefit for the NEU honors program is the WV-F housing. What other benefits accompany the honors program? =

kjofkw, do a search through some of the previous threads...there are a couple of parents who have posted some info....the honors program benefit that I have seen is that there is academic advising on the first floor of WVF. During last semester's class registration when my son was having trouble with his schedule, he was able to walk in and get someone to help him right away. This is important because classes are filling as you are struggling with the online registration process so time is of the essence...
By the way, the disadvantage I have heard is that the honors dorm group can get a little small...Stetson and the other freshmen doors are a larger group....

what about class competition and rigor? for an above-average student, but not quite "genius", would that student have a harder time getting a good gpa/grade for the honors class? i say this b/c maybe one day i'd like to get an mba, where college gpa counts! are the honors students uber competitive for a harsh curve or grade deflation, as is the case with most prestigious undergraduate business schools? thnx!

fuzzman8me, I am a parent, not a student but I haven't heard uber competitive. The students are in midterms right now and I am hearing about study groups, collaborating (when allowed), etc....
Remember, NEU is really about the co-op program and as far as the classwork goes I don't think it is as uber competitive as "most prestigious undergraduate business schools." These are students who are focused on the practical, pre professional...not that the academics are not there but I haven't heard about that kind of competitive stuff....
