Honors program chances

Hey guys.
I applied to au regular decision and was wondering what my chances for admittence into the honors program were:

sat I: nearly evenly split 1350
sat II: 720 w, 680 mIIc
about 3.6 uw gpa
top 15% of highly competative public high school in florida
good ECs, recs
hardest courses taken, all honors or aps.

Do y’all think I have a good chance?

Hm.. it's really hard to tell. I'd say you're on the borderline... and I guess it will depend what everyone else's stats look like...

But in case you don't know, if you don't get in for your first semester, you can apply/nominate yourself after that and be in for the rest of your four years!

If you have any questions about AU or the honors program or anything, feel free to contact me!

Are you in the honors program?
And how do you think it differs from regular AU? I don't just mean the stuff on the web site about it, but do you think it makes a big difference and that the advantages are worth the extra work of it?

Visited AU this past weekend, my daughter absolutely loved what the school and DC has to offer her. She too wants the honors program. Can you tell me if you think she will qualify.

Jr at a top HS in NYC, one of the 4 nationally recognized NYC specialized High Schools, commutes an hour and a half each way just to get there (and you can be sure she will be making sure the colleges know this)
3.8 un weighted GPA, almost all honors classes.
Currently in AP French, with AP English, Govt and Calc to be taken next year.
Old SAT 630V 780M, new one to be taken in March, will probably do better since the anaolgies are gone and she is an excellent writer.
700 SAT II Math I, will be taking Math II, French and English
EC in school:
4 years varsity softball..captain Jr & Sr year
NHS..will most likely hold office next year (you have to be a sr)
Junior Achivement
Writer for the school Satire newspaper
EC outside of school:
Tutoring a neighbor's kid in math..for 4 years.
Volunteer student docent in the nations only Tibetan art museum (tour guide)
Volunteer for "shoveling for seniors" where she shovels snow for those who cannot do it themselves. Got a letter of commendation from the mayor.
Volunteer youth softball coach at a local little league

seems like she's on a role. The SAT she has should be fine, I've heard 1400+ is good. That's why I'm worried about me... I'm really on the fence there.

Did you have to apply for the honors program, or do they automatically accept some applicants??

I didn't apply for the honors program, just sent my regular app online and i got an e-mail yesterday notifying me that i was accepted to the honors program and would be getting an official acceptance packet in the mail within 2 weeks.

I really don't know what they require for acceptance to the honors program, but if you want to see my stats, i think they're on the "official acceptance thread"

My S was accepted into the honors program (via email). Has anyone received any scholarship info yet. He got email is waiting for admissions packet but am curious about scholarship amounts.

sideways, you can find out anout financial aid and scholarships by going to https://my.american.edu/cgi/mvi.exe/A26.APPL.LOGIN and logging into the prospective student portal. once in, there is a list on the right side (sort of) of links ("Personalized Links"). Click on "Financial Aid Award Package" and then click the link in the top right corner that says "Forward - Year 2005-2006." This should tell you of any scholarships and finaid your son has received. Official documentation will probably come with his acceptance packet. Congrats to him on honors!!

It doesn't list any info. We didn't apply for need based aid. My son did list it as his 1st choice school for National Merit Finalist. I would think they'd give him something. Maybe they haven't listed all the scholarships yet.

It's quite possible that they haven't had a chance to post it all, for whatever reason. The AU website says "National Achievement and National Merit finalists who designate AU as their first choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by February 1 in their senior year: Award range: $750 to full tuition. Renewal requirements: 3.20 cumulative grade point average and completion of 30 credits each year for three years. National Merit finalists must designate AU as their first choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation." Your son must be getting something, then. I did not list AU as my 1st choice school for NM (I put "undecided" because I have NO idea where I'll end up), and I did not apply for financial aid, but the portal shows me that I received a scholarship. Some people are saying that theirs lists both merit aid and need-based aid. When I talked to one of my friends today who was accepted to AU, she said her portal doesn't show anything either, but she didn't apply for financial aid, and I'm not sure whether she'll get scholarships or not.

Also, if when you're on the FinAid Award page and it says "You do not have any financial aid awards for this period," make sure you're on the "Year 2005-2006" page (it says "2005 - 2006 ESTIMATED FINANCIAL AID AWARD PACKAGE" near the top of the page). If you're not there, look at the links at the top right that allow you to move between years (ie "Forward - Year 2005-2006").

Did that at the portal...nothing! It seems he would get something so I hope that just haven't updated everyones file. guess we will have to wait for the admissions package. Congrats to you on you scholarship. Hope my s hears soon. Anxious to know.

if one gets the dean's scholarship, but with a 3.74 gpa and 1320 sat score, do you think she'll get into the honors program? are leadership skills included in the decision?

Sky, everyone gets that... lol... I got it too, with 1350 and 3.6 GPA.

Supposedly, the email would have said that you got into the Honors when they sent you the one about admissions...
Plus, 1320 is highly unlikely for honors.... the line seems to be drawn around 1370-1390. So I at least had a chance with 1350.

But nice try...

My S was told about Honors when he received his acceptance email. Today there was an invitation in the mail to an Honors overnight March 31. So I would assume you should know soon if not already.

I really don't know what the minimum requirements are for the Honors Program but I was accepted this week into it and also received a 15,000 scholarship (no additional application necessary).
My Stats are:
1410 SAT (710 V, 700 M)
4.0 UW GPA
8/432 rank
Lots of ECs: drama club, plays, film club, v softball, v golf, newspaper
Hope this helps!
