Maybe I was lucky. I got the decision within 6 weeks. Rolling admission rock. Earlier you apply, earlier you get the decision. Application process is simpler too in my opinion. No special application to scholarships. Compare that to WUSTL admission process. It is such a nightmare. Phew. Essay after essay for every little thing. You have to write essays for scholarships even before the admission decision.

I do not enjoy writing essays. I have written more than a dozen so far. My only complain on U of M is that they require you to write another essay for honors program. Why cant they simply select whomever they want and be done with it?

I just emailed honors to check the status of my app. I'm pretty bent on getting into honors is because I desperately wanna get into Ross, and if I don't get preadmit honors would be a good way to get me in after frosh year. I was invited to the program and have a 3.8, 32 ACT, real solid essay. They emailed me back and told me a decision has not been reached on me and the will get back to me in late February. I'm guessing this is a bad sign? Should I hold out hope? I'm pretty bent on getting into honors is because I desperately wanna get into Ross, and if I don't get preadmit honors would be a good way to get me in after frosh year.

For those who are already in admitted to honors, what are ur stats? Can u please post because I havent gotten a decision yet with 4.0 GPA and 32 on ACT and 2 5's on AP Tests.
I think I had a good essay. Should I be worried? I sent out my app before getting an invite, I did a request thing...

central perky: i too had little trouble with the admis. office; they had a decision in less than 4 weeks, and were friendly and helpful whenever i called.

Is it possible that they stopped admitting students into honors until February? Was anyone accepted into honors after the first batch? Latest I heard was that some decisions are deferred until feb.

me2008: I am also waiting with similar stats. ACT 34, Class rank 1/450+, Perfect GPA, AP's etc.

I received the email inviting me to apply to the Honors College three days after I received my admission decision. I am currently debating on whether or not to apply for it. I am in absolutely no mood to write another essay on top of the zillion essays I have to write for school. I have a few questions:

Is being in the Honors College a good thing, or is it just a bunch of harder classes?

Would my future employers care if I was part of the Honors College?

Do I have a better chance of getting into the Honors College because I received an e-mail about it without me inquiring about it?

Would I still have a chance of getting in without writing the essay? (The e-mail said that the essay was optional, but let's be real here)

For people who have already been accepted to the Honors Program, what did you write about? (for your Honors essays) I am not asking which topic you chose but what specific material you decided to write about (for eg. if you wrote on the 'most importan place' in the world topic, where did you write about and why?) I realize these essays can be personal, so I wouldn't have a problem if you guys don't really feel like sharing, but for those who don't mind I would really love some feedback.

ArmenianGirl2008: I'll try to answer a few things; someone correct me if I'm wrong about anything.

"Is being in the Honors College a good thing, or is it just a bunch of harder classes?"

it's definitely a good thing, and it's not just a bunch of harder classes. some classes are probably harder, but you will get cool, small classes too. also, you get priority over non-honors kids when picking classes, and you get the option of living in nicer honors dorms.

"Would my future employers care if I was part of the Honors College?"

maybe. regardless, you graduate with honors on your diploma.

"Would I still have a chance of getting in without writing the essay?"

I would say if you have amazing stats (4.0 with 34+ ACT/2250+ SAT), yes; they do want to steal kids away from ivies.

Yes I did write an essay, the on about going back in time or something?

I adapted that from a short story I wrote a while back in High School so it was like done in about 5 minutes. It's kind of long though, don't think anyone would appreciate me posting it :P

Does Michigan Honors have a good reputation outside Michigan? (I'm international so I don't know). How is the honors program's reputation compared to Yale or Johns Hopkins or Rochester (the other schools I am applying to)?

is graduating from the honors program the only way to earn "cum laude, summa cum laude", etc. at graduation? or is that more based on GPA and such?

idk if people are still interested in my stats/essay but:

4.0, 2380, 5 5's and a 4 on my APs, 11/675 in the class.
my essay was about the year in time i'd visit and i picked 1800.
i was also one of the kids who found out on the first day that michigan released decisions this year (late october)...but that's probably because i got my application in obscenely early. :-)
