Honors Program Packet- Anyone Receive?

For all of you honors program participants, did you receive the big packet on the specifics of the program today? I did, and boy does it sound like it will be an enjoyable experience. Everyone ready for a January in Florence! Heck yeah! The Service Corp and seminars also sound like fun, so I'm glad I signed up, can't wait to meet all of you in August.

yeah, I got that too.... how many other CAS Honors Scholars are on this board? there aren't that many people who get into the program

I am part of the Scholars Program too. Were any of you at the Dean's weekend? if so, whats ur name...maybe ill remember you...?

I got a letter in the mail telling me about the Freshman honors seminar and that they encourage me to enroll blah blah blah. I did not get a packet. So what does that mean? I am in the CAS honors program or does everyone get this letter asking me to check it out?

I just got the packet too, but it was the first I had heard from the scholars program. I was a little confused and ****ed that they didn't let me in before, because I received the 25k merit scholarship associated with it. I even asked them if I was in before, and they told me probably not. But happy now...what seminar is everyone going to sign up for?

My top three choices are the Supreme Court and the Religion Clauses (1), Debates and Speeches in American Politics (2), and Freedom, Classical Liberal Principles, and 21st Century Problems (3). The rest of my top 10 are filled out by law-releated seminars, a few polysci ones, a compsci class, and the "randomness" seminar. Should be a fun time.

Anyone else applying for the service honor corp? Sounds like a good experience, although it requires another application and a one-page statement (can you tell I'm in summer laziness mode?).

I'm so confused...I'm not a presidential scholar or anything but I did recieve $7,500 merit aid per year, and also got the freshman honors seminar packet in the mail. So is there such a thing as being a scholar but not a presidential or DEAN scholar???

I think the honors seminars are offered to any freshman, but Presidential Honors Scholars are required to take an honors seminar.

I JUST found out i was in it... as in, they just accepted me. Is that weird?

But I only got 10,000..so i called, but god i hope they increase my aid.

So im confused... do we not have a christmas break since we are in florence?

i think augie is right....

i am so in summer lazy mood too, i am apply for the service honors thing, but i really don;t want to write it all.

Hey, I was also accepted to the pres scholar, and I had a question about what to choose for the lectures. I plan to do pre-med at NYU, so I was wondering if I should study a science course or something completely different? Also, are there grades for these classes?

how many people are in this program?

There were about 120 scholars last year...I believe it's the top 5% of the incoming class. Scholars from all the schools get first pick for the honors seminars, but non-scholar cas students can sign up for whatever's left during orientation. I'd recommend picking something you're interested in, not just a science one because you're premed. They all count as elective credit anyway, and some of them are subjects you would never otherwise study. They're also excellent for making connections with top professors/staff so read through the bios before you pick. They are graded, and most people find theirs to be harder than the average class. And yes, the florence trip takes away a week from your month-long christmas break, but it will be one of the best experiences of your life so you won't even miss the week of vacation =)

thanks for the info... do you know if we have to pay for the florence trip? I know the study abroad comes from our pocket, but should I be saving up for this too?

Last year, we had to pay about 300 bucks for it. You also had to pay for a few meals once you got there. The school pays for everything else: the plane ticket, an amazing hotel, transportation in Italy, museum tours and sightseeing, and some of the meals.

Oh thats not too bad then! Thanks so much for the information... how do you like the program? just from a students point of view?

At the risk of insulting everyone's intelligence, don't put off applying for or renewing your passport if you plan to take the florence trip.

lol that's good advice. I almost missed that deadline. I love the scholars program; a lot of my friends are in it and it provides another community in such a large school. It also encourages or forces me to do things I otherwise wouldn't do but should by giving us cheap opera tickets etc and requiring community service and holding us to that gpa requirement and asking us to write an honors thesis senior year. If you want to, you get to make buddies with the deans, which I think is a big plus. It's a great thing to have on the resume, especially for on-campus jobs like orientation leader or RA. Of course, nothing beats the trip, and a few scholars who didn't like the extra work quit after the trip. But it's considered a great honor to be selected for the program from a really accomplished student body, and to me just this is enough to justify a few extra hours of work. It's pretty much like everything else at nyu in that the more interest/effort you put into it, the more you'll get out of it.

haha WC.. thats actually good advice.

Thanks so much for your input nyc2008... yeah, what are "al" events.. was that a typo on the website or i'm just out-of-it? and what are some other cultural events?

so do we apply for the deans honor corps now? when is the thing due? anyone know?

also, does everyone in the scholars program fly to florence together?

HOW FUN! its like a field trip.... haha...but really far.

im so excited and everything that nyu2008 said makes me even more ecstatic about this program... nyu really is the number one dream school in my mind!
