Honors Program Question?

I would LOVE to attend GWU (it's my first choice) only problem is, I will need a considerable scholarship in order to attend... I'd like to double major, and study abroad, therefore, the additional course requirements of the honors program do not really appeal to me and I'm not that interested in applying to the honors program. What I'd like to know is, if I do not apply will my scholarship chances be affected? In other words, does applying increase your chances for scholarship/not applying decrease your chances?

For finaid scholarships? Nope.

For merit scholarships? Schools are known to give merit scholarships to people in their honors program. Like Penn State, for example. I’m not exactly sure about GWU. It can’t hurt your chances though!

i don’t think it matters…but how and why merit aid is doled out is kind of a black box that nobody knows the answer to

My S applied to the honors program. He was accepted into the honors program and also received a scholarship, but I recall that the scholarship was not tied at all to accepting a spot in the honors program. He could have accepted the scholarship but turned down the honors program. I would advise you to apply to the honors program and make up your mind later about whether or not to accept if you’re offered a spot. My S accepted the honors program invitation, and he loves it. Nothing but great things to say about the professors and the small classes (often only 12 in a class). Also, many of the honors courses count toward the gen ed requirements, although I heard those have changed. Plus honors students get priority registration, which is a big deal when you’re trying to get all the classes you want when you want them.

Thank you guys! I think I will just take your suggestion and apply. I actually decided I might be interested after all - the only thing that concerns me is the requirements the honor programs imposes. Would I still be able to double major if I enrolled in the program?

I think you would, but I’m not sure. My S has chosen to minor, not double major. He came in with the max number of AP credits as a freshman, but he is also planning to do a semester abroad where he takes courses he wants to take solely to enrich his experience without any thought to whether they will count toward any GW requirements. I also think GW revises requirements every 2-3 years, so again, my advice would be to apply to the honors program and, if you get accepted, spend more time figuring out whether it would allow you to double major.
