i was accepted into the honors program today..after requesting it..the thing is...all i have heard about it are that it gives extra work to its students..and basically just so they can have an "H" on their transcript..also it's only during their first 2 years at michigan..so..are there really any advantages to being in the honors program besides getting overworked? thanks in advance!

smaller classes, more classes taught by professors, honors housing, I believe it goes all 4 yrs if you choose to stay in but a thesis is require to graduate. Harder? maybe More Stimulating. Yes.

whats so good about the honors housing? and is it really worth it?

bump................

Hi, I'm currently a freshman at UofM and I'm also in the honors program. Let me tell you from my experience that the Honors Program is really overrated. The counselors pressure you to take more work than you can handle and the fact of the matter is that you don't have to be an honors student to take honors courses (although a select few are only available to honors students i.e. pointless obscure humanities classes). The only benefit of honors housing is that you're guaranteed to live at south quad, which is the ideal location on central campus. It has the best food in my opinion, and a cool 9th floor that you can use for studying/computer usage. Otherwise, there really are no other benefits. In the brochure it says that there are roundtable discussions, thats bs, everything is optional and frankly the guy in charge of the honors program is really annoying and sends out SO MANY emails that you just stop caring about them and delete them on the spot. And yes, the honors program is a 2 year program. In your 3rd year, you can decide to enroll in an honors CONCENTRATION and write a thesis. If you stick with the honors program for the first two years, you will be eligible to get a sophomore honors award depending on how well you do (3.7 GPA or higher --> which is kind of unfair because some ppl have WAY more difficult schedules than others i.e. my roommate got a 4.0 but all of his classes are such jokes... ****es me off) Anyway your decision to enroll in honors is strictly your own, so don't take my post that seriously, although I caution you to think it through. O and Great Books is overrated too, almost everyone stops reading the books after the first week.... it's massively curved so that most ppl get A- or better.

Thank you Calloftheblade for the post that every U of M prospective honors student has been looking for on these boards for quite a while. I think i heard the same when i visited but i didnt pay much attention. Sounds like i'll just be doing the honors classes thing but not the program and just hope im in south quad.

i have been accepted into engineering. although not in lsa, i believe stistically i am eligible for the honors designation...but i understand engineering does not have an "honors" tag for dorm assignment, speaker/programs, study lounge w/in dorm etc. Any freshman engineers out there and what dorm did they assign you?? any suggestions?

bump. good post by calloftheblade

Engineering students will be mixed in with other students for housing. They don't really care what school or college you're in. Engineering students are not eligible for the Honors program or Honors housing. Most likely, you'll end up on the Hill or North Campus.

bump................any other comments on honors program?
