Honors program requirements :(

I posted this on the UF board, and they told me to post it here too, so I'd appreciate it if i could get some help. :)

On the UF Honors program website, it says the minimum SAT score is 2070 OR 33 ACT. Unfortunately, my highest score is a 2060 and 32. I've already been accepted to the Honors program at FSU and USF, and will most likely get into the Honors program at University of Miami.

My question is: will it be better to go to UF normally or to the Honors programs at the other schools?

I plan on majoring in either History or Geography and the kind of career that I want to pursue will require graduate school, if that helps any.

I really wanted to be in the Honors program at whatever college I go to, and I don't really have strong loyalties to any one college. I know there is lateral admission into the honors program at UF, but I'm not sure I would be able to get in with that.

This question has been asked before. It would be far better to attend Florida State, get Honors and possibly the scholarship monies than UF regular or UF Honors without the money. There is not much difference, if any, between UF and FSU in most program areas.

If you are torn between the two, take the money now and go to grad school at the other.

The graduate school issue is a good point – when I answered on the UF board, I didn’t realize that you are thinking that far ahead. Two considerations: 1) you do not want to be carrying a lot of debt on the undergraduate level if grad school is in your future. Too many students are graduating college with tremendous debt and it will affect their lives for many years. I say this because you are considering UM – good school from what I understand-- but you will forever be know for the last degree you get, so please be careful with debt; and 2) I would think that the honors college at any school would give you a leg up on grad applications – more access to falculty members and more research opportunities.

Finally, are you, by any chance a resident of central or south Florida? The reason I ask is that I have come to the conclusion that UF is a huge beneficiary of geography. For instance most of my daughter’s friends (she is in all honors and AP classes, so she runs with a great crowd) don’t consider FSU simply because its too far away from home(we live in Orlando). Since a huge percentage of Florida’s population is closer to Gainesville than Tallahassee, its logical that UF enters the consideration set of many more students than does FSU. People feel the need to justify their decisions and do so by praising their own choices. When we lived in Fort Walton Beach in the panhandle, FSU was by far most students’ top choice.

You’ll be fine wherever you go. I think its great that you are taking the initiative to get other opinions and perspectives. Keep in mind that everybody is biased so you will ultimately need to decide for yourself. Good luck – you’ve already shown more initiative than most – pretty sure you’ll succeed wherever you end up.

i live in south florida and the distance between the two wouldnt sway a decision of one over the other because theyre both far. not that im saying im looking forward to the drive but it is what it is. i guess i have pretty thick skin as far as driving goes, driving like 8 miles to school and 15 miles to work so i really dont care how far places are, im going. and no i dont live out in the woods, its called urban sprawl.
