However, what makes my question different is that money is simply not a factor. Sure, it would be nice if the school I went to was cheaper, but frankly I come from a very fortunate family from which I could go to school anywhere. So, in terms of education, will the honors michigan provide anything more than the madison honors that i should seriously consider? even if I like Madison slightly better and it's closer to me. Try your best to compare and contrast the two programs, thanks!

The differences are negligible. Wisconsin is probably a lot cheaper for you, and even though your family can afford Michigan, I would say use the savings for a down payment on a house or other investment.

One thing to consider though…if your family lives really close to Madison and it wouldn’t feel like you’re “going away” to college, and because your family can afford it, I would encourage you to spread your wings a bit and go further from home. But if Madison will allow you to live in the dorms and not feel like you’re so close you have to go home every weekend, I’d say Madison is perfect.

yup thanks^, ya im a senior in high school, and my bro is a senior at Uw-madison. It’s like 2.5 hrs away, so its good enough. My bro tends to comes home every 3 or 4 weeks, so it’s not too bad. I would have preferred to go farther and “spread my wings” but I think that distance still accomplishes what I want from college.

Once again, I know money may still make this an obvious choice, but I just really want to hear the differences from an academic standpoint. Because in money terms, I’ve already answered this question (madison). I just need to make sure i’m not missing any worthwhile academic points. Keep the comments comin guys!

It really depends on what you intend on studying/doing after you graduate. If you are premed, intending on majoring in Engineering or interested in a career in academe/research, I would say Michigan and Wisconsin are virtually identical and I would recommend Wisconsin because it is a significantly cheaper option.

On the other hand, if you intend on majoring in Business and would like to work for more exclusive companies (West Coast techs, management consulting firms or IBanks) or if you are prelaw, I think Michigan is a better option.

Badgers for the win. Having lived in A2 and Madison (not for school), Mad-Town is definitely a lot better. The quality of the education is on par especially for UG. I would go to Wisco and never look back!!!

I would recommend that you go to Michigan because it has a more accomplished student body and a better overall reputation. If money isn’t a concern, then why not go to the better school? Michigan has a better pipeline in almost every conventional postgraduate career path I can think of including medicine, law, business, engineering, public policy, etc. in comparison to Wisconsin.

I think it’s always good to go to another state for college and broaden your horizons a bit. Another important factor to consider is that if you do well at Michigan undergrad, you will have an easier time getting into Michigan Med compared to other non-Wolverine applicants. I went to one of the top high schools in Michigan and I can count off at least 7 friends off the top of my head just from my school that are going to Michigan Medical School after attending UMich for undergrad. Michigan’s professional schools seem to love their undergrads.

Michigan is not better in the sciences as indicated by the ARUW rankings which rank schools for sciences and engineering research and reputation.

Wisconsin’s med school takes half the class from UW Madison alone.

k thanks guys, guess i can go to madison with confidence. Hopefully, someone will still be able to answers specifics comparing the honors programs. I know the colleges itself determine this decision mostly, but iv’e heard that the umich honors program is more involved, and so if anyone can give specifics on that, then i could settle on madison once and for all.

UW has a number of special academic programs that might give you what you are looking for. Besides the Honors program there are the Chadbourne and/or other learning communities which dovetail well with Honors. Another good option is Biocore which is a concentrated bio prep sequence for high achievers in biosciences.

Michigan honors has two parts. In the freshman sophomore years, you are expected to take at least two honors courses per semester. This can be a class that is dedicated entirely to honors students such as math, great books or chemistry or a regular class that has an honors discussion section such as american history. A 300 level or higher class can also count. There is a separate group of advisors which gives the honors college students some additional attention. There is also honors housing and monthly events for honors students. Junior and senior years tend to be within the major and there is a required honors thesis.

As between Michigan and Wisconsin, the schools are similar in what they offer. Michigan is generally recognized has having a better reputation but you are probably looking at marginal differences rather than being leaps and bounds above the other. Some will argue that Michigan is better. Some will say that they are about the same. Fewer will argue that Wisconsin is better. Both schools are in great college towns.

Being in-state, I would concur with most of the posters on this thread that Wisconsin is the better value unless you have a desire to venture outside of Wisconsin for a different experience.
